Much fun has been had about the high lewd to in-game pic ratio in the game covers I've been scanning. While hilarious, in the world of #PC98, this doesn't mean the games are bad, or an afterthought.🧵 I think the higher-ups / marketing guys just had a "firm" stance on which "assets" to promote 😹

something i really didn't need to get, but did

the suruga pricing rabbit hole goes very deep, & the same goes for other parts of their operations. speculating about this stuff has become one of my favorite pastimes, as you can glean a lot from various patterns, & the more you learn about how everything works, the better you can game the system 😸

hold up, here's actually one for potentially *really* cheap (if it flies under people's radars) auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v...

so maybe the way it works is, they buy these in for 5k a pop, then send them for thorough testing, which costs them so much they can't sell them for under 5x kaitori. then sometimes, the testing shows the machines fully working, and they make off handsomely, which lets them not care about the lemons
January 8, 2026 at 10:52 AM
interesting also that they often go out of their way to fully inspect these systems, writing up long descriptions of the myriad ways in which the internals are messed up. maybe the cost in wages of doing that makes for a price floor they can't cross? 🤷‍♀️
January 8, 2026 at 10:43 AM
the good deals often sell very fast / immediately after getting listed, so when casually browsing the categories, you tend to see only the bad ones... it's weird that they don't slash the prices of even the worst ones, when they don't sell, as they're just smelling up the warehouse for no reason 😹
January 8, 2026 at 10:41 AM
the way they do things is clearly working out for them, and the quirks in their system form the backbone of my collecting and preservation efforts, so i'm definitely not complaining either 😸

occam's razor though suggests that everyone there is just high on crack, as per usual 🤣
January 8, 2026 at 9:56 AM
that's definitely a fun one 😹
January 8, 2026 at 9:52 AM
personally, i like the scenario where you can go dump your worst condition pc's to suruga, and get paid 50% of their nutty asking prices. but somehow i don't think that's how it works. and yet, it seems equally implausible that they'd value trash they bought in for 1k this highly
January 8, 2026 at 9:19 AM
the thing is, if it turns out they only paid a pittance to the seller, then why are they marking them up this much? 😹 these units are trash lol, with better ones being always available on YAJ for a way better price. so by logic, they're either overpaying, or getting them for free and being greedy af
January 8, 2026 at 9:13 AM
wondering about those totally trashed and shockingly overpriced computers you often see on suruga. did they really pay ~50% of their asking price when buying those in, as per their normal kaitori system? no chance in hell, right? cos they'd be grossly overpaying for absolute junk that never sells
January 8, 2026 at 9:04 AM
this is a great one. generally been hard to find under 10k (if available at all), but a few cheaper copies have popped up recently. here's the best one i spotted www.suruga-ya.jp/product/deta...
@krugman.net A title like this seems like the kind of game you'd recommend me to buy off Suruga-ya for 3000yen

"daisenryaku" finally makes an appearance on the manual
January 7, 2026 at 8:47 AM
i always find this cover interesting. you'd think it's a flight sim or an addon campaign to some established series, but no, it's daisenryaku, the first one. does that english sound cool enough to forego the need to include the *actual* name? same thing on spine and back
