UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I've been wondering why Dominion Voting Systems suddenly reached settlements with Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, and One America News.

Turns out, it's been purchased by a Republican-owned election tech firm that insisted on it, per Axios.

Uuuurgh same. There is a 'free trial' actually, which lets you use an otf / ttf file without real restrictions, except that the * and # characters are swapped and / is swapped for \ to annoy programmers

AFAICT actual terminal monitors in 1968 would have been using vector-based fonts, as opposed to rasterization/pixels. A historically accurate font would look more like the Hershey fonts, but to my eye they actually read as more modern than the 3270 fonts.

I'm looking into historically accurate late '60s terminal fonts for my roguelike project, tentatively set in 1968. For now I'm using an open source clone of the IBM 3270 font, which was a real terminal font introduced c. 1971. It's a great font but the anachronism bothers me a lot!!!

The design and philosophy behind this font and its corresponding website are just... good. It's not a free font but I see font design as an art and paying artists for their work makes sense to me

Jack Posobiec explicitly says that "Antifa" dates back to the Weimar Republic, explicitly acknowledging that this administration is opposed to those who resisted the arrival of Adolf Hitler in Power.

Monstrous.

"federal agents detained nearly every resident of the 130-unit building—including children and babies—placing them in zip ties and separating them by race into vans for more than two hours early Tuesday morning."

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

I did in fact do a dumb, and updated the gist to fix. The good news is it was in the lines for calculating how much faster the bitmap is vs 2d arrays. It's actually 35% and 50% faster for set and get respectively
kunstderfuge.bsky.social
Same, I'm not exactly doing graphics here though, just using BitMaps as a 2d array of booleans to represent dungeon layers in a game -- for example transparent/opaque tiles (for shadowcasting and FOV) and things like which tiles an entity has explored.
kunstderfuge.bsky.social
This will at best shave a few milliseconds off of some lighting and FOV code I'm working on, but IMO that matters! And I assume bitmaps are more memory efficient but I haven't tested that or looked into the implementation
kunstderfuge.bsky.social
Doing some premature optimization after finding this thread. Turns out in my testing that BitMaps in Godot 4.5 are much faster than arrays for set and get operations, and surprisingly 2D arrays are much faster than 1D arrays of booleans

forum.godotengine.org/t/combining-...
Screenshot of a text editor with the following Godot console output:

Bitmap set:
1.9516 ms

Bitmap get:
1.76954 ms

Array set:
9.82276 ms

Array get:
10.09842 ms

2D Array set:
3.08974 ms

2D Array get:
3.4968 ms

Bitmap set is 80.02% faster than 1D array.
Bitmap get is 82.02% faster than 1D array.
Bitmap set is 12.02% faster than 2D array.
Bitmap get is 17.02% faster than 2D array.
