I think one thing that needs to be said in the argument over judges v juries is that juries are far, far more diversely drawn than the judiciary. Juries will usually include, for example, at least one person under 30. The judiciary won't.
I don't know what effect that has, but it's a difference.

Of course another consequence of removing juries from all but the most serious crimes is that those pesky juries won’t be able to find annoying protestors not guilty.

<div class="field field-field-text"><p>Israeli forces on Wednesday deployed military reinforcements, bulldozers and heavy equipment towards the Nur Shams camp in Tulkarm Governorate in the West Bank, Al Jazeera reported. </p>
<p>The municipality of Tammoun also reported that large forces of the occupation army stormed the town as aircraft fired on the residents and neighbourhoods.</p>
<p>As part of the large-scale operation, the Israeli army bulldozed roads, cut water lines, closed the town's entrances, and turned at least 10 houses into military barracks. </p>

Unusual last-minute change means panel of three will now hear case rather than Mr Justice Chamberlain
Concerns have been raised after the judge who was expected to hear a legal challenge to the ban on Palestine Action was removed from the case at the last minute without explanation.
Mr Justice Chamberlain had granted permission for the judicial review and said that he would preside over the trial but it has emerged that a panel of three different judges will instead hear the case, which is due to start on Wednesday. Continue reading...

![Rachel Reeves, Angela Rayner and Allison Gardner have all received donations from African water privateer Alison Wedgwood. Wedgwood once stood as a parliamentary candidate for Labour in 2007, she is a former Labour councillor, and currently CEO of eWATERservices, a private water operator in Sub-Saharan Africa. Wedgwood also founded Africa Water Enterprises, “to introduce private sector drivers and rational [sic] to the rural water development sector.” Wedgwood argues that publicly-owned and free to use water services cannot work in Africa. However, organisations such as Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa have called privatisation “one of the biggest threats to the realisation of the human right to water on the continent of Africa”. Privatisation of water in Africa has also been accused of “exacerbating inequalities”, “undermining universal access” and threatening Africa’s human right to water. Alison Wedgwood worked for a time at the World Bank, which is known for its ideological commitment to privatisation and is regarded by some as the driving force of water privatisation globally. The total amount donated to Rachel Reeves by Wedgwood is particularly large at £70k, donated in 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025. £16k went to Rayner in 2024, and £2k to Gardner, also in 2024. The majority of the shares in eWATERservices are in the name of Alison Wedgwood’s husband, Tom Wedgwood; he is also a founder of and director at management consultancy firm Newton, who have multiple contracts with the NHS.
