it can be kinda cool sometimes, like sometimes they find their own sauce in their completely isolated style. i played one where every trainer had like the dumbest curated gimmick kits ever and they put complex magikarp tech in the first 20 minutes of fights. but yeah prob not what you're looking for

pokemon rom hacks are so min-maxed on making the existing structure harder, that they're made by ppl who are unaware other types of hard rpgs (ie dungeon crawlers) exist or could be implemented into pokemon. so u do just get hard mode hacks like "WHAT IF EVERYONE WAS CRACKED". it's a decent answer

watching a friend play the dragon quest 2 remake. reminded me of the cool NES-dramatic opening scene of a castle getting raided. but i wonder if someone would Feel that cutscene was special, when its remake gives it the same artstyle as an era of RPG where that type of thing was already standardized

sorry for vomiting 5000 posts into ur replies but. games are so weird. the more time i spend in the hobby it's just like. ppl are not interested in learning how to do things, unless they fall in love with the gameplay at first sight. and then rpgs are weird cuz ppl fall in love with a diff angle

it's also like okay not to like that game lol but that was sorta just an example i've seen happen across several franchises, with ppl i knew well enough to rly read their mindset. ppl can be so distracted by wanting to see something through they forget to meet it on its own terms !!

it's interesting when a single franchise is on different sides. i knew kingdom hearts fans who rly hate chain of memories. it forces them to learn new rules, which they don't wanna do. but they also bash their heads against it anyways cuz they feel experiencing it is necessary. but playing it isn't

it might just be hard to motivate someone to try to understand the Core of a game's mechanics when the Core for them is elsewhere (story). the ones with weird mechanics but beloved stories tend to piss ppl off, because they don't have the motivation to learn the obstacles when that's not their focus

it's not good in execution either... the plot just has a lot of moments where you straightforwardly walk up to the ainu analogues, and break the rules of their holy grounds because their traditions are wrong and old-fashioned and you are right. evil ass real world parallels

what an ending. wow. i also (to a lesser extent than oomf) had the thing where all my skill culminated bc while i didn't 1cc it, i had another continue to spare. like i had jumped from not beating the game at all to p confidently 1ccing the first 6 acts. great game we will be playing impact mode
