Seeking a postdoc position?
Balancing selection is a fascinating process: malaria resistance, self-incompatibility,etc. Yet, countless examples remain hidden in genomes!
If this question intrigues you, the project led by Laure Segurel and Violaine Llaurens (Paris + Lyon) is perfect! urlr.me/Huj2De

Does anyone have a favorite experimental evolution overview for undergraduates? Ideally one that goes into the details of fitness assays, marking strains, etc.

Everything I’ve found doesn’t dig into the details sufficiently.

Red tussock (Chionochloa rubra) is flowering in the garden now. One floret in this spikelet is open, presenting two fluffy stigmas, one on each side of the spikelet, and three dangling stamens. #bloomscrolling 🇳🇿🌱

Cash creek in Tate’s Hell State Forest (Florida). Nearby vegetation is a mixture of holly, saw palmetto, and slash pine, with a smattering of Lobelia glandulosa and a nice trail. Heavenly.

Recently visited the Glass Flowers at Harvard, a collection of 4,300 extraordinarily realistic glass models of plants crafted by the Blaschkas, a father and son team of sculptors

That’s right, these are all made primarily of GLASS — a fact difficult to accept given how accurate & lifelike they are

In the field today in Florida with my collaborators, Chris B and @andreacase.bsky.social. This site might not look like much but it has 3 Lobelia species and a hybrid. The state mows the edge, but these species send out side branches from the cut stem—cut and come again. Roadside botany rules!

Another Primer in Plant Sciences! 🎉 🌱

Fantastic topic, lots of nuances reviewed here to clear up misconceptions. Check out the appendix for an extended glossary and some questions you can use to assess student understanding.

Please consider writing a primer in your area of expertise!

We have a copy but my partner is reading it first. Can't wait to dive in. For the record, Oren wrote "The Price of Altruism," a completely compelling documentation of George Price's search for an understanding of altruism and selfishness. Get a copy of both!
Very excited for the arrival of Oren Harman’s latest book.

Few combine deep knowledge of the history of biology with such compelling writing.
