I certainly won’t shed a tear over the fact Watkins is no longer breathing, one of the most vile men ever to live. But I remain firmly of the view that people should not be killed in prison. A very dangerous and slippery slope.

Irrespective of any views on Allen, I don’t see this as a problem. The facts are they were a couple for some time and made many films together over a 30+ year period, including some of her finest work.

Yes. Zero chance he would ever have been released.

Under the Guardian article there are plenty of supporters of the killing. As you say, a Tory MP suggesting the return of capital punishment would receive vitriol.

Once you start to condone prison justice, you start a very slippery slope. The correct justice for Watkins happened - his lifetime incarceration. Nobody will miss him. But let’s not make his killers out to be heros.

The very concept of agreeing to disagree seems to have vanished.

Pretty sure we will see a US version of the Nobel Prize launched shortly, followed by various commentators intend on discrediting the original. I am also reasonably convinced we can predict the first winner.

Finally, given how tough it can be to get an appointment, it should be a distant priority. Let’s improve health first!

It also needs to tackle one of the bigger causes of stress and mental health problems: employment. Poor working conditions, bullying managers and uncertainty. /3

But not all types of work are suitable for people with medical conditions. The scheme depends on getting the advisors to place individuals in suitable roles, not having targets for numbers. It also needs employers who are not so dogmatic about performance targets, office work, KPIs etc. /2

This is potentially a good idea, but with a whole lot of caveats.

Firstly, the basic principle must be that working age people are better off in work unless it is impossible. Helping those who wish to work or can work is a sensible idea. /1

Precisely the same comment could be made re football - I am not a season ticket holder at the OS but have occasional use of one - different people around me every time.

In the meantime, with cards on the table, Madness in December, Pixies in May and Metallica in July. Average age of band members must be 60+. I am not really doing my part to give new music a chance….

Radiohead’s gigs will be interesting - apparently a highly selective audience (I got a code but their software wasn’t convinced I was human!) but will the select audience want a Radiohead gig or The bends, Ok Computer with Creep as an encore? A career mix may not be popular.

Does it spell cultural disaster? It is harder to start as a bad, to establish yourself and build a fan base. Luck, rather than grind, is the best chance of success. But I am not sure £100+ tickets are the significant factor behind this. People wanting to sing Wonderwall rather than find new sounds.
legalclaret.bsky.social
Cultural change is also a significant pull factor. So many in the audience for Oasis were there for songs released before they were born - not a problem in itself, but their business model is based on two albums. Nobody comes for a slice of Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. Experience first. /4

Especially when doing so means touts take a large profit on tickets. /3
