When David Brooks joined the Republican Party in the 1980's it was already a racist cesspool.

Lee Atwater's famous quote (predating the 1980's BTW) proves every claim otherwise to be as false as claiming the sky was somehow pink in the 1980's.

Our March piece is live! @amandaraeprescott.bsky.social goes deep on racism in period drama fandom, tracing the history of responses to inclusive and racebent casting, and zeroing in on the complicated dynamics of Bridgerton's global fandom. Read the piece or listen to a full audio version:
Bridgerton and Period Drama Fandom’s Enduring Racism Problem — Fansplaining
Complaints about historical accuracy and acting quality are often dog-whistles: some fans only want to see white actors—and white history—on screen.

What does it really mean to eliminate DEI programs? Michael Brice-Saddler spoke to the VA's first chief diversity officer about efforts to ensure mammograms for women vets and improve health care access in rural communities — all of which is now under threat.

I forgot that the Eaton Fire started in a national park maintained by the federal government. Same with the blazes that burned Altadena. Since 46% of CA is federal land, most wildfires start on federal land too.

Dear Uncle Sam: Before blaming California, you might want to check whose land the L.A. fires burned
Our state and its leaders need to press the federal government — not just for disaster aid but for massive investments in public lands.

The fact that NIH grant-making has been switched off so haphazardly, for reasons that remain unclear, and despite the scope of troubles it creates, suggests that higher ed will be profoundly vulnerable during the second Trump era, writes @ibogost.bsky.social:
The Chaos in Higher Ed Is Only Getting Started
Grant reviews have been suspended at the NIH. This could be an omen.

Trump's immigration crackdown is not about law & order. He has a vendetta against immigrants who followed the law, too
His EOs threaten to punish legal immigrants by doubling their taxes (invoking a never-used 1934 law); expatriating their kids; and blocking them from the US entirely
