Interesting read, with so much detail. Made me think of the rise of "y'all" nationwide (as the country becomes more southern) and the decline of the southern drawl in places like Atlanta (as the south becomes more like the rest of the country).

Got a story out today about something I’ve been fascinated by for years: From Atlanta hip hop to Bama RushTok, here’s how and why the South has taken such a firm grip on modern American culture. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
The United States Is Southern Now
From booming metros to culture-defining exports, the South has quietly become a demographic powerhouse and a battleground for the country’s identity.

It's nearly the end of term, so thanks to all the linguists who have appeared on the show this academic year. We've had some great interviews and met some lovely people.
And thanks to all of you for listening. We'll be back in the Autumn term and are getting a few things lined up for then.

At least one reason why I mostly don't write accents in my comics is basically this. Who gets written with an accent and who doesn't is always a tell.

This. It's like how Southerners used to transcribe Oasis as saying "fookin'". No. They said "fuckin'". Southerners say "fahrkin".

Wet blanket here. These stupid things never fucking work because *obviously* people in Manchester already read Aldi as Aldeh. They'll read Aldeh as a different word. You London-centric pricks. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We're having a bit of a break from new episodes at the moment but if anyone has requests for topics (or linguists) for future shows, give us a shout.

You will find masses more over the last few years if you have a search. We’ve not done as many Lang in the News segments in recent months as we’ve not all been together as much as we’d have liked, but we have covered a lot of new research, new thinking and some old faves. Have fun!

Language Diversity research – accents, dialects, sociolects and more – is something that we have always tried to keep on top of, so in recent months we have talked to experts about accent prejudice in the legal system: open.spotify.com/episode/2SJO...

Episode 70, just a few weeks ago, was a great one for paper 2. We talked to @emhumps.bsky.social about prescriptivism and how people try (and usually fail) to control language use. This gives a great overview for a lot of issues on the paper: open.spotify.com/episode/6aoS...
