Immigration (and exmigration) is good, has increased human welfare and human liberty, has broadened societies, and is a demonstration everywhere of a society’s dignity
Haha American special forces getting prepared to pointlessly invade a distant country valuable mainly for minerals and its location in relation to space and existing satellites, couldn’t be me, I write, in fucking, Australia

✋ the Pope should excommunicate JD Vance

👉 the Pope should make JD Vance physically walk across Europe to apologise to him, with the last stretch crawling through the snow on his knees, something Popes have been known to do

All those videos of American cops and ICE goons all kitted out reminds me of the police in NSW in my childhood, who in the 1980s and early 1990s were at the height of unaccountable violence and corruption, yet dressed in slacks and short sleeved shirts

The traditional example is known to the Ottomans as the Auspicious Event and yeah it was rough.
How does a country get rid of a heavily armed paramilitary organization with access to $75 billion in funds and no civilian oversight? Genuine question. Are there models for doing so? Seems like it'd be extremely hard and dangerous to do.

The Pope is not going to excommunicate Vance, absent his going all in on some specifically wrong bit of doctrine. The Catholic tradition is to keep people like that in the Church and just humiliate them in public over and over and over, and I respect that

I do love that in the lead up to the Sydney Olympics, Carr decided to do an FM radio interview with Andrew Denton.
DENTON: Let’s try this. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
(beat)
CARR: Indeed.

On the week Jakarta was overthrowing Suharto, Carr just happened to be in town and this popped out. I think about it all the time lol

In his own way Bob Carr has always been one of the weirder Australian politicians and his Premiership, in the 1990s, was one of the weirdest times. He’s more uncanny than Tony Abbott, for my money. In a deep way he’s just not *like* other people.

Re @osmanfaruqi.bsky.social’s post about Commissions. The interesting thing about two of the most important in memory, the Wood RC in NSW and Fitzgerald inquiry in QLD is that they were established explicitly because of Parliament’s failure (and by extension the people’s) to counterbalance media. >

It’s not an ordinary citizen’s duty to watch videos showing murders, and I say this as someone who did have to watch a video showing a murder, as a juror in a trial. It will affect you in ways that will not make you a better person.

✋ deterritorialising (laudatory)

👉 deterritorialising (derogatory)
Very bleakly funny that circa-2012-2015 conservatives have been totally vindicated in their arguments against the postmodern turn in parts of academia, the embrace of ‘ways of knowing’, rejection of bureaucratic rationality, etc.…because they embraced all those things and it was indeed a disaster

When I say I don’t think the Americans are a reliable treaty partner or ally, I don’t mean ‘under this government’, I mean the American people as a whole who elected it, twice. I like Americans! I have met many! Americans are usually pretty cool, but as voters I fundamentally distrust them
