Finally got around to reading Dark Archives by Megan Rosenbloom! @libraryatnight.bsky.social
As a fellow death-positive LAMs professional, I thoroughly enjoyed her thoughtful & occasionally witty work on the otherwise macabre subject of anthropodermic bibliopegy.

Thanks for reading!
Now that I have some time, I am back to reading choice nonfiction. Starting with @libraryatnight.bsky.social's "Dark Archives". Just about 1/3 of the way through and I am enamored with it. It fits my tastes so well. Perfectly macabre and intriguing.

A range of archival and visual material at the Morgan Library paints a nuanced picture of its first director, Belle da Costa Greene: a “passing” Black woman and prestigious librarian who assembled a world-renowned collection of rare books, manuscripts, and art.
A Celebrated Librarian’s Concealed Life
Known as the “soul of the Morgan,” Belle da Costa Greene established the Morgan Library & Museum’s collection and lived as a “passing” Black woman in the early 20th century.

I saw a writer I like refer to April 1 as DAY OF LIES and I’m about as fond of that name as I hate the day itself. So Happy Eve of Lies, I will be staying off the Internet as much as possible tomorrow.

At today’s reopening of the Altadena library, Levar Burton read us a story & every adult cried & healed a little bit. Blair Imani (!) painted 8yo’s face, helping her live her feline dreams! What a morning for library love, especially with so many of us librarians under attack these days. 🥰🌈📚

The thing about so-called generative artificial intelligence is, the intelligence isn't artificial. It's real. It's OURS. The techbros stole our intelligence (our data, our thoughts, our stories, our art) and used the software to regurgitate it and spackle it together into digital particleboard.

Season finale of Severance was so good I’m doubling down on the corporate isolation by listening to early 2000s Radiohead.

For my book people: the sliver of the nerd population who would appreciate the joke of this button made at my library is so narrow and I’m right in the middle of it. Drop an emoji if you knew both references without me explaining, which I’ll do in the comments. 📖 🐬

Wow LONGLEGS is the scariest movie I’ve seen in a long time, maybe ever? Nicholas Cage is unforgettable. ::shudders::

I have been hearing so many bone chilling stories from librarians across the country at conferences last year and I know it’s going to get so much worse.
"Amanda Jones, a librarian in Louisiana, has received death threats since speaking out against book bans. She was labelled a paedophile and filmed by strangers in public. She fears going out alone. “I can name a librarian in every state this has happened to — and I fear it’s only going to get worse”
I am the ‘Michael Jordan of book banning’. This is why I do it
Bruce Friedman has challenged 1,200 books since the pandemic, alarming free speech advocates — and librarians who face death threats

It’s terrifying, honestly, when I realize how dependent we are on Amazon and how hard it is going to be to disconnect from it. But this is one piece of the effort — another better approach to E-books.

Because admit it. You think Jeff Bezos won’t disappear disfavored e-books if Trump demands it?

Or as my Bajan mom likes to say “wrong and strong about it”’
Every single stupid conversation I’ve had with a scientist about anticipatory obedience and historical comparisons over the last week has had me thinking about how scientists’ political incompetence is one of the major arguments for a liberal arts education

Like you’re literally a tool without it
A bunch of needs in labcoats:

"If we comply with the fascists demands they'll surely let us keep up our research"

Those same scientists months or years before:

"Eh, I'll skip history class. I wanna be a scientists. Not a historian lol"

Storytime: I plan to go to a low key Super Bowl party, because even though I don’t care about football, I’m still from Delco / Philly so #gobirds. Anyway I got this vision in my head that I’d do a more modest riff off of an ELGSES cake I saw, referencing the Philly mayor’s recent spelling gaff meme.
