My choice with this previously was 'stay in the group and continue to tolerate bad behaviour, snippy comments etc. that everyone would shrug at and would drive my anxiety into overdrive' or 'just leave and be free.'

My take is that you need some weird element of obessiveness to do it. Not necessarily OCD, but just like a weird hyperfocused drive to do it even if it's actually not the best idea.
