In the spring, the Trump administration abruptly cut $500 million from an emergency food assistance program that delivered meat, dairy, eggs and produce to food banks across the country.

Thousands of planned deliveries were canceled without warning.
Trump Canceled 94 Million Pounds of Food Aid. Here’s What Never Arrived.
ProPublica obtained records from the Department of Agriculture that detail the millions of pounds of food, down to the number of eggs, that never reached food banks because of the administration’s cut...

Looking specifically at Black women, this group has experienced the most layoffs this year.

This was highlighted recently in this @nytimes piece: www.nytimes.com/2025/08/31/u... (4/9)

President Trump’s federal takeover of D.C.’s local police is unprecedented. “The last person who asserted the authority to use military personnel for routine law enforcement anywhere in the country for any reason was King George,” a legal scholar said.

I sat on a DC superior court grand jury for 6 weeks in 2023 and out of about 60 cases where we took votes (nearly all for multiple charges), we only *didn’t* return an indictment for one charge. We still indicted the person in question for other stuff. The AG staff were pissed and made fun of us.

Washington, D.C., has a population roughly equivalent to Alaska's.

And it has zero senators. If D.C. had senators, the GOP megablil bill would have failed today.

Instead, Murkowski got carve-outs and money for Alaska, and then voted to subject DC to the bill

For 6 months, Dem leaders have downplayed or refused to frontally address many of Trump's worst abuses by saying those are "distractions" from the Dems focusing on economic issues. But as Trump's tax bill is being voted on, Jeffries is attacking a Dem ...over a phrase that Dem doesn't even use.

The Senate Republican bill would cut SNAP by $186 billion - 22% by the final year. This would be by far the largest SNAP cut in history and would rip food assistance away from millions of households, including families with kids and veterans.

CAP’s edition of InProgress today features me highlighting how Senate Republicans are racing to the finish line to pass the largest-ever cuts to health care and food assistance. Questions about the Big, “Beautiful” Bill? I’ll do my best to answer here.

On the third anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, revisit our reporting about the women who died after not receiving timely medical care in states with strict abortion bans:
Life of the Mother
When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, doctors warned that women would die, but lawmakers who passed state abortion bans didn’t listen. The worst consequences are now becoming clear.

The first person arrested by the Marines is an Army veteran who was on his way to work at the Veterans Administration. It appears he was arrested for crossing a yellow line which the Marines did not realize was not designed to exclude federal employees from reporting to work.

Marines deployed to Los Angeles carried out the detention of a civilian on Friday, the U.S. military confirmed after being presented with Reuters images, in the first known detention by active-duty troops deployed there by President Donald Trump.

This is super important. Maybe the most insidious threat to poor and working-class in the whole big beautiful bill? SNAP promises you won’t starve whether you live in New York or Mississippi. By shifting billions in costs to states, SNAP is no longer the federal guarantee millions rely on.
bbkogan.bsky.social
Like the House version, they're pushing costs onto states. These are less extreme than the House version, but the biggest problem still remains: by being a shared model, states can drop out of the SNAP program, dooming their people to starvation.

Tariffs & ICE raids are connected insofar as they are attempts to blame economic & social conditions entirely on the actions of foreigners while attempting to paint domestic enemies as a traitorous fifth column working with the foreigners to undermine the country

The GOP’s tax bill isn’t just a giveaway to the rich—it’s an attack on SNAP, a key anti-poverty tool and economic engine. @lilyroberts.bsky.social from @americanprogress.bsky.social explains how these cuts would deepen poverty and destabilize communities.

Missed this last week: new research shows that sicker, older people were hardest hit by SNAP paperwork requirements in CT. But people who had incomes (so were obviously working!) lost SNAP too.
jacobwswallace.bsky.social
RESULT 2: Sickest folks hit hardest by work requirements

Disenrollment risk was

≈2× higher for people with diabetes

and

≈5.5× higher for older adults (40-49) with ≥3 chronic conditions

Concerning evidence the sickest and most vulnerable folks are screened out by work requirements.

In the budget reconciliation bill, House Republicans are trying to cut SNAP by $295 billion. This would cut it in third in what would be by far the largest SNAP cut in history.

This would rip food assistance away from millions of people, including households with children as young as 7 years old.

Groceries cost a ton in AK. Grocery stores are at risk of closing if Alaskans lose SNAP, which means that everyone will have to travel farther. The state will face $$ penalties bc of the state's error rate, not individuals committing fraud. Begich will vote for this! www.politico.com/live-updates...
