Loved the part where they note MIT does not have legacy admissions— an item curiously missing from the administration’s demands about “fairness” and “merit”

Understanding how Black Americans got to where they are today, requires understanding Black history. The Green Book Project is a place to share the rich historical journey of Black Americans finding dignity during the Jim Crow era:

Another impressive highlight from MIT’s response to the proposed “compact:”

“MIT has never had legacy preferences in admissions.”
Dear Madam Secretary,
I write in response to your letter of October 1, inviting MIT to review a "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education." I acknowledge the vital importance of these matters.
I appreciated the chance to meet with you earlier this year to discuss the priorities we share for American higher education.
As we discussed, the Institute's mission of service to the nation directs us to advance knowledge, educate students and bring knowledge to bear on the world's great challenges.
We do that in line with a clear set of values, with excellence above all. Some practical examples:
• MIT prides itself on rewarding merit. Students, faculty and staff succeed here based on the strength of their talent, ideas and hard work. For instance, the Institute was the first to reinstate the SAT/ACT requirement after the pandemic. And MIT has never had legacy preferences in admissions.
• MIT opens its doors to the most talented students regardless of their family's finances. Admissions are need-blind. Incoming undergraduates whose families earn less than $200,000 a year pay no tuition. Nearly 88% of our last graduating class left MIT with no debt for their education. We make a wealth of free courses and low-cost certificates available to any American with an internet connection. Of the undergraduate degrees we award, 94% are in STEM fields. And in service to the nation, we cap enrollment of international undergraduates at roughly 10%.

Black families tend to have strong preferences against nursing homes, usually driven by concerns of inadequate care. Seeing that Black nursing home patients have significantly worse outcomes, and that they are driven by *within-nursing home* differences in care, confirms this suspicion.

I’ve heard nothing good about One Battle After Another from my circle of friends. One friend told me he had to leave the theater 2/3 through the movie. The “fight or flight” instinct kicked in.

This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system.

I am not fearful — I am fearless.

We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights..

I sometimes find "nice" and "kind" to be at odds. Nice requires a level of fakeness and veneer of politeness/respectability that simply isn't possible to deliver if your goal is to be kind, in most cases.

I often think of "Minnesota Nice" when I think of niceness. It's truly NASTY WORK! 😒

You keep on using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means. In less jovial terms, don't make up definitions to suit your faltering argument.

We do a deep disservice to this history by conflating animus with the social system.
People have no idea how much racial debasement and dehumanization was consumption. It was something created and consumed by white supremacists.

The call for the state to mass execute Black men is deliberate. Racial misandry as policy has implications for the lives of Black men. This discourse is something the work of @proftjcurry.bsky.social has been writing about for years. His work speaks to this moment. www.theroot.com/why-this-whi...

I know @proftjcurry.bsky.social has been speaking about this racial misandry for more than a decade. The call for the state to execute Black men as a necessary societal goal is implicit in a lot of policy we see today.

This is wrong on every level. It’s a rigorous process that can take years. Just because a small number of rotten people faked being blind or paralyzed doesn’t mean the system should be gutted or over 9 million veterans getting benefits smeared. This is so dam irresponsible of WaPo.

This makes total sense in light of American history. Whether people agree with an administration’s policies typically depends on who they are enforced upon. Since this administration is targeting “Democratic cities” Republicans largely approve.

Just openly cheering the destruction of any representation of gay people in public space. They think their power is totally unrestricted, and the entire country will support them rolling back society to the 1950s, or maybe the 1850s
