Currently working through Kristopher Kyle's Python for Corpus Linguistics tutorial. So far I haven't made too many mistakes... let's see how long that lasts.

This is a thing that fascist regimes always do, and it’s specially designed to terrorize brown people here. I spoke about it on TikTok www.tiktok.com/t/ZP821vydf/

Finally getting around to looking at some qualitative responses and may I just say the act of looking at this large of a spreadsheet is making me dizzy...

The IRB has finally approved interviews for the slang study! Given the lack of Black voices in the original sample and the origins of a lot of LGBT slang, I'm looking for people in those communities to provide insight in addition to those who took the survey:

Are you teaching undergraduate students in a language-related course this semester? Or, do you know some undergraduate students interested in language?
If so, I'd appreciate you sharing some info about a study I'm doing on podcasting and critical language awareness!

Currently trying to dig deeper into the historical origins of LGBT+ slang and kind of surprised at how little there is beyond "originated in black drag/ballroom culture". And there doesn't seem to be any primary sources for them - has this research just not been done?

I'll be so real this was me procrastinating but if anyone wants a pride-flag inspired color palette for plots here it is:

Pleased to report that I still have a 100% success rate when someone says they're using AI for a task by responding with genuine enthusiasm "Oh! That's so neat! How are you verifying it?"

IRB Amendment filed for this. Also to allow interviewees to be credited, if they choose.

Now we wait.....
An important note: Black voices were very underrepresented in the data (n=17). Given that many of the terms stem from AAVE, I'm considering recruiting Black LGBT+ english speakers for interviews separate from the survey, since that is not my community to speak for. I'll keep y'all updated on that.

SLANG STUDY UPDATE!

WOAH! Y'all went HARD at sharing this - thank you! I've closed responses, and my RAs and I are going to get to work coding the data starting tonight.

That being said, heres some preliminary results:

Linguist twit—Bluesky, I’m running a study on LGBT+ English slang knowledge in both LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ US English speakers! It’d be much appreciated if y’all could take it and share 🤠

Someone uploaded my IPA Typing guide to course hero. It’s free on my website and I’ll be damned if someone takes money from students to view it - does anyone know if they’re usually good with copyright claims?
