While there will almost certainly be the odd comment that seems very strange to us now, I love the world and the characters. She's also very good on the xenophobia towards Poirot! This book has lots of people (who are definitely the bad guys) asking Poirot if he's foreign and taking against him.

In other words, Christie is actually taking a swipe at people saying women are "asking for it". She's saying that women merely want the freedom to behave as men, but when they exercise that freedom, they're criticised for the harms done to them. /fin

In her internal monologue, Lynn recognises that there's not much point to life if women can't walk down the street, go to parties, go on dates etc. - all activities that expose them to danger. /5

Thirdly, I think a lot of people misunderstand Lynn Marchmont's comment about women "asking for it". That comment is often taken out of context when people criticise Christie. Lynn's internal monologue adds an all-important caveat. /4

Secondly, despite being published less than 3 years after the end of WW2, she's already able to offer incisive insight without the benefit of hindsight. She talks a lot of the "ill will" in society post-WW2. All the characters have different ideas of why they fought the war. /3

Firstly, Christie's descriptions are actually great. She describes Frances Clode as a "greyhound woman who looks good in tweed". I know exactly what this woman looks like from 6 words. The economy of her language is so impressive. /2

I listened to Taken at the Flood by Agatha Christie on a long drive to North Wales this week. I wasn't particularly keen on this book when I read it as a teenager because there is next to no Poirot, HOWEVER, on a second reading, I noticed several incredible things... /1

I don't really understand why Aaron's piano didn't also get a handshake. It looked equally as impressive as Jasmine's fountain and the feedback on taste was very similar. 🧐 #GBBO

😂😂😂 Good luck to people who have the time but living happily in clothes and homes no matter how stylish they look is way more important!

I just wanted to let you all know where I am on the very controversial topic of wearing vs styling. I am very much Team Wearing. I have never knowingly styled an outfit, unless occasionally wearing a necklace counts.

Under promise, over deliver. Some call it unambitious, I call it respectful. Promising what you can actually control beats promising what sounds good. From police performance meetings to kitchen companies - the cost of broken promises is higher than you think. My @brightonargus.bsky.social latest👇
Avoiding under delivery at all costs
Those who know me might describe me as a stickler for reliability. I certainly try to be both in myself and my expectations of others. It could be…
