Now I’m a High German speaker in Zürich. I can (wearily) hear Germans from a mile away but I don’t exactly speak like them. Yet when I do speak to them we share something that sets us apart from Swiss German speakers.

I learned German - today my primary language - as a teenager by pure brutal immersion as an immigrant kid in Düsseldorf. But the kind of German I was exposed to and remade into my own language was very specific.

Under Trump 2.0 the US is effectively speedrunning Russia’s last 25 years in mere months, and people react exactly the same way as they did in Russia, it’s not that bad, we can shield ourselves and our people if we cooperate, etc. etc. Because it’s happening to them for the first time.

you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate

Die Ukrainer wissen das natürlich, dass also im Zweifel Produktionsausfälle von wenigen Prozent in einer aufgeheizten Angststimmung richtig große Probleme machen können, weil das System in Russland halt so aufgebaut ist wie es aufgebaut ist. Dazu müssen weder „20%“ (Selenskyj) noch „38%“ fehlen

Für die Probleme auf dem Benzinmarkt in Russland sind Überregulierung und Preiskontrollen mindestens ebenso verantwortlich wie ukrainische Drohnenangriffe. Aber liest man das irgendwo? "Raffinerie go boom" ist schnell und einfach erzählt, schon klar, aber etwas mehr Mühe könnten wir uns schon geben
