Denmark runs one of Europe’s most restrictive asylum systems, revoking protections at scale and even seizing belongings to cover fees.

Some countries hail it as a model, but it carries serious risks: it undermines human rights and damages integration outcomes.

A former president of Belgium’s Constitutional Court wrote a legal paper, commissioned by Prime Minister Bart De Wever, urging governments to appoint more conservative judges and to revise key asylum rules allowing greater flexibility in deporting asylum seekers.

Yesterday, the Commission named 4 states for migration solidarity support (Spain, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus) and other 14 as ‘at risk of migratory pressure’ or 'significant migratory situation'.

Next: solidarity through relocation, funding, or something else?

Mamdami’s program fits the tradition of municipal socialism first seen in London in 1889, later in Milwaukee’s so-called “sewer socialism,” and reaching its peak in Vienna from 1919 to 1934.

My take on what 🇳🇱 elections may mean for 🇪🇺 @ Politico.eu

“What is already clear is that the Dutch electorate voted far more pro-European than it did in 2023. […] Euroskepticism that once dominated the political mood has given way to a quiet mandate for cooperation”

No, FT, the story of the Dutch elections is not “Netherlands swings to centre”, but the fragmentation of political landscape, incl among the far-right. So Wilders’ PVV no longer clearly the largest, but combined seat tally of the far-right remains stable (+1).

Guest-worker schemes and temporary migration are embraced even by populist-leaning governments because of labour-market pressures and demographic decline in richer countries. They often come with less job security, fewer rights, and greater precarity.

Several major UK parties now have policies on immigration that would make Le Pen or Wilders look like softies

Giorgia Meloni’s government has lasted three years.

As of yesterday, it is now the third longest in Italy’s notoriously unstable republic.

This is possible because of her pragmatism, the discipline within her government coalition, and a weak opposition lacking a clear political programme.
