the tea party was really a seminal shift in how the median congressperson behaved in person

you stopped needing to be a successful schmoozer and started needing to be a totally unreasonable lunatic to win your primaries, and social media has only accelerated this
My theory that as members of congress are increasingly batshit it will increasingly select for even more batshit people who can tolerate the job is doing pretty well
Congressional retirements at a historic pace in both chambers. Per @ballotpedia.org , 50 Members have now announced. ballotpedia.org/List_of_U.S.... I gather it’s a miserable era to be in Congress for many incumbents.

The four Republicans in the House are practicing politics, and not especially complicated politics either.

I think one reason why people stick with us is we point out how often basic politics is not practiced. The astonishment when people see it is really something.

Lots of people know someone who's down on his luck, dope, whatever, and he has to go home. The family takes him in, and they stick with it, even when it tears them up. You should never dance on people's graves but in a situation that's close to the bone it has political consequences.

Leonard’s rule is right for his books. What it really means is clarity of thought. Shakespeare sounds like writing, but the thought is crystal clear. Even when it’s not, the SOUND is clear & that does the job. Writing usually ‘sounds like writing’ when it doesn’t know or care what it’s doing.
Everything I've heard/read from Nuzzi's book violates this classic writing "rule" of Elmore Leonard's. (I, for one, don't always agree with this rule, but it is 100 percent true here.)
