Canadian first. Critical metals for the energy transition - development, processing, impacts. Most professional stuff on LI. Also comments on transportation, urban design, and political systems. And other life matters...
Thanks to unseasonably warm (less draw) and dry (more production) weather (but not unprecedented as @yegwxnerdery.bsky.social points out), my solar system has delivered about 2/3 of my power so far this month. In February. But #solar doesn’t work in the winter in #yeg

I bet the adherents of the three major parties have different views of those Canadian values though. How many from wax party would agree that adherents of the other parties share Canadian values? As the CPC drifts further right and Maple MAGA I think the gulf widens. #cdnpoli

.@ABDanielleSmith and @jkenney pass themselves off as conservatives. In fact, they are "authoritarian libertarians," Smith more so than Kenney.

Does this not sound EXACTLY like Smith's UCP govt?

So glad that #yeg has free skate rentals on weekends at the free City Hall ice rink. I always see immigrants trying it out for the first time mixed with old-timers like me. Getting on right after the Zamboni 😁😁

Breaking news, Canadian conservatives confirm they like losing so they can whine and moan, elect a leader unelectable in the country.

That this is necessary tells you something. Autocrats hate independent judiciary because they want no one to be able to stop them. Also why they hate true independent media.
Quite unusual: Alberta's three Chief Justices have issued a signed statement on judicial independence. No reason specified but comes not long after Premier Danielle Smith made some comments re: same during a year-end interview.

This is exactly why the humanities are critically important in post secondary institutions. The foundations of who we are.

Expertise and knowledgeable analysis of the moment we are in.

Never accept the lie that humanities departments are an unaffordable luxury that universities should axe.
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Great day for a bike-skate-bike-skate-bike-beer #yegbike . So great to see many new Canadians learning to skate at City Hall, then very quiet at Legislature rink!

I would really encourage #greenlanders to talk to the US Pacific Island peoples about their experiences with attempts at resource extraction before thinking about deals with US administration. Territories have little rights; Puerto Rico et al still have no path to statehood. Neither will #Greenland

My ancestors came to Canada via Minnesota, (Bemidji, Albert Lea). Mostly 1 generation in USA, so glad they headed for southern SK and northern AB! I recognize I am of immigrant settler stock who homesteaded on cheap land from a colonial government. What is going on in MN is sickening.

This.
I have to say, as a Canadian, I'm unabashedly proud of what the prime minister has done here. The global order that feeds all of us has been rotting from hypocrisy, and it needs to be rebuilt when the circumstances allow. Action will need to follow rhetoric, but action begins with thought & speech.

1 person in Canadian politics standing up. Please @eleanorolszewski.bsky.social - get the government off X. Never use X for distribution of information related to your emergency management portfolio. It is not trustworthy and my government should NOT be supporting it. Signed, #yeg centre voter
The CBC has just posted a transcript of my recent As it Happens interview about X and Grok. I’m posting a couple of screen shots here - since they are a bit too long for alt text, I’ll post the link to the full transcript below. #cdnpoli #X #Grok #yeg #CSAM

Got in my first #yegbike and skate today. Ice District has no ice, City Hall is pretty rough (needs a zamboni treatment), legislature is ok. Maybe ice way at Victoria Park tomorrow. Bike routes in decent shape, bumpy ride most places, crossing big snirt piles at intersections ok (warm weather).

#yeg #yegbike after walking and riding around NW central areas today, some notes. Most of 121 st is as good as it has been all winter, except the door death zone near Unity Square, use the sidewalk. 114 ave pretty good from 121 st to St Albert Trail. 113 st pretty good from 111 ave to 105 ave but
