Jirel isn't a barbarian - warrior-woman, yes, but a technically civilized one. Aside from Robert E. Howard's Conan (and later Dark Agnes, which she read in manuscript), she might have read Talbot Mundy's TROS OF SAMOTHRACE and just possibly Arthur D. Howden Smith's Swain the Viking series.
Curious what barbarians there might have been in fiction before she came along - what stories she was likely reading.

The trick I've found to be the most useful when designing a story's cast is not just to work them up in silhouette (ensuring that they read differently at a foundational level), but to start with literal shapes. You can more easily spot the means to differentiate similar components (like armor).

I have mixed feelings about this video. As a Levolor blinds salesman, I was hounded by agents of the National Curtain Closure Council. They’d leave notes on my windshield that said “Better stay in.” It really messed with my body Thetans. #HailXenu
