hello from outside the ice detention center in broadview, illinois.

i’m at the corner of 25th and harvard, where a small (for now) crowd is gathering to protest the masked federal agents abducting people throughout chicagoland.

state and local police have already made a handful of arrests today.

The illegal fence in front of ICE is set to come down Tuesday by midnight. Help me stay through Wednesday to cover it!

Currently headed to my third protest of the day, so watch for updates.

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

This shutdown is about many things but to first order: Republicans want to let poor people and folks in rural areas especially to struggle to live.

They want to leave people to die.

Call your Senators and insist they do not vote for any funding bill that does not restore the Medicaid cuts.

Even those with insurance will have to travel further to get both primary care and urgent care. People will delay care, others won’t get it at all.

There will be health care deserts.

People will die.

So these patients going from bringing in revenue to increasing deficits is 100% going to lead to some hospitals and community health centers closing.
And when they close, entire communities will be cut off from health care.

When large numbers of people who used to have Medicaid coverage become uninsured, those health care providers will still provide health care to those patients.

They are required to, by law.
But these are nonprofit health care practices that have the thinnest of margins to stay open.

And not just because people who lose their health insurance will die. They will, but that’s not the only reason. Rural hospitals, critical access hospitals, and community health centers depend on Medicaid payments to stay open.

🧵 regarding the shutdown:

The Democrats aren’t being clear enough about this but we can be: this shutdown is about saving lives.

If we don’t reverse the Medicaid cuts (and the ACA subsidies on insurance bought through the exchanges) that Republicans made this year, people will die.

seems like a non-insignificant percentage of rage against the machine's fanbase are young republican men driving SUVs bopping their head to anti-oil, pro-immigrant songs thinking the lyrics are about how they wish their suburban parents would get off their back
Tom Morello tweets: "Fascinating that all those “don’t tread on me” posers and their AR-15’s are nowhere to be seen and government tyranny is instead being opposed by a guy in an inflatable frog suit."

Someone named Manny replies: "@grok
why do some people say Tom Morello and band mates are RAGE FOR THE MACHINE and not against ?"

The message must be "No bailouts for billionaires." AI is not too big to fail. And should it fail, the richest men in the world should be held accountable and take responsibility for their failures.

“It's an entire political ad, from a major Democratic politician, that is exclusively defending trans rights. Has this ever happened before? I haven't had my morning coffee yet, but none are coming to mind.”

We need so much more of this! Stand up, Democrats!

I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

They like what Trump is doing, this really isn't hard. It's not both-sideism, it's running cover for the regime by choice in order to reach a desired outcome. Can we please stop cutting this institution slack it does not deserve?

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

My publisher’s been very patient. I’m not doing everything I said I’d do to promote this book (out in a few weeks) because I’m an organizer in a city under federal attack. My days are full and emotionally exhausting. Any help getting the word out means a lot. It's a book people need right now.

It's seriously infuriating how national media is bothsidesing Portland. There's a major (award winning!) airport here which you can fly nonstop to from every city in the country.

Now is probably a good time to note "disorderly conduct" has a broad definition and there's little stopping a cop from framing your conduct as disorderly at a protest (which they need to do in order to disperse people). Whether charges stick is a different story. But we know how this typically goes.

Basically all the ai "value" is either investments in costly physical infrastructure or a handful of companies buying into / from each other.

Bc they run on hype, one of Altman's tricks has been announcing giant costs as though they were revenue

This is the thing about ai. The benefits are nebulous hypotheticals but the costs are very high and immediate
