To me, takes like these come from a classroom or historical understanding of philosophy as pie-in-the-sky theoretical musings, ignoring a lot of the actual contemporary (and even historical) work being done in the field.

Philosophy of biology is also it's own field, that deals with pressing foundational questions that biological work is based off of. I'm sure Hank could find plenty of topics that would pique his interest within the field. Bioethics is also very biologically and medically inclined.

Hank's point about biology is weird to me, because as someone who has learned Phil of Mind, neuroscience and biology are seen as paramount, and every theory of mind, whether its idealist, materialist, or even panpsychist, has to fit within the scientific understanding, otherwise it's ignored.

Philosophy interacts with the natural sciences (including biology) in very meaningful ways that a lot of people may not find to be immediately evident. Almost every philosophical discussion of reality, metaphysics, or the like has to contend with the natural sciences if it is to be accepted 🧵
A lot of philosophy has always kinda rung hollow to me because there just isn’t very much biology in it and that seems insane to me.

(I recognize that some times when people have tried to put biology into philosophy have gone very bad.)

I don't think this discounts general systems theory as a whole though because the "Nazi justification" makes no sense, and he was by no means the only person who worked on it.

Ludwig von Bertalanffy was a biologist who helped put general systems theory into a philosophical and biological context, which was huge. Unfortunately, he was also a Nazi and tried to use systemic theory as proof of Nazi superiority, which is unfortunate.
...is there an example of someone putting biology into philosophy when it DIDN'T go very bad? I'm only really aware of the bad ones.
