OSMAnd has a much better designed map than Google Maps: walking directions are much more clearly visible, buildings, squares, roads are more clearly marked, allowing walkers to see at a glance where they need to go. Google Maps is optimized for cars and bikes, the route is a lane.

Now it’s time for other 501(c)3 charitable organizations to change tack, stop relying only on the sharks to drop the leftovers and start developing pay-to-play schemes. https://www.maffulli.net/2026/02/01/stop-begging-the-case-for-paid-open-source/ #NonProfit
Stop begging: The case for paid Open Source
The Wikimedia Foundation shows that there is a path to charge companies to participate fairly in the open ecosystem. Not just charitable donations out of goodwill: Services that companies can contract and pay for.

We need to stop begging only for donations and start integrating Open Source costs into the standard language of procurement and service contracts. https://www.maffulli.net/2026/02/01/stop-begging-the-case-for-paid-open-source/ #NonProfit #OpenSource

The European tech lags behind its US and Chinese counterparts, and we can’t respond by talking about democracy and “values” instead. https://www.maffulli.net/2026/01/12/distractions/ #business #eurostack
Too many distractions from the mandate to build products Europeans want to buy
Don’t take the bait: Europe needs more products that people want to buy! Build more, worry less about democracy and nazi-bar-level debates.

Went down a bit of a rabbit hole tonight looking at standard.site and atproto and how it all might be useful for something I'm playing around with and... yeah... even though I'm already biased to like atproto... dang, this is cool.

You can just do stuff. And that stuff can... communicate.

I guess all we need to have a European cloud is to give a corporate card to #FOSDEM attendees and let them build the servers that will replace the evil Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc. Seriously? https://www.maffulli.net/2026/01/12/distractions/

BAD: The keyboard is the god-awful XPS13 Plus
Good: The keyboard is black (not that disaster light grey keys+white symbols)
BAD: The XPS13 is not ready yet

Book review: The Artificial Author: Creativity and intellectual property in the AI era
The Artificial Author is a wide and deep analysis of the role of copyright in Europe and the US for generative AI, from training to the generated output. Aliprandi avoids declaring copyright dead; instead, he argues for its necessary evolution.

The "Artificial Author" is a misnomer and that’s the point. The book challenges the anthropomorphic language. If an AI "hallucinates", who owns the dream? The prompter, the coder, or the public domain? https://www.maffulli.net/2025/12/16/book-review-the-artificial-author/
