I started my lab almost three years ago and never would have thought I'd be working with so many awesome students and colleagues today! Can't wait to see what comes next! Happy holidays from the Sogin Lab!

Started a starter pack for the presenters and attendees of the 2025 Animal-Microbe Symbiosis Gordon Research Conference. Let me know if I should add (or remove) you!

I wanted (should have) turned around and asked if they would take their daughter to the hospital if she broke her leg… Sigh.

Overheard last night at dinner: “My daughter can’t go to HS bc she isn’t vaccinated- it’s ridiculous bc everyone else is vaccinated so there is no chance of her getting sick”

🤦‍♀️

Do not treat this as fait accompli. We are winning in courts and public opinion. Nominees are being withdrawn. Congress is shook. Musk is leaving.

Organize. Call. Appeal. Sue. Keep the pressure on your bosses.

Do the same for trans and immigrant rights, public health, and more. Solidarity forever.

YES! These NIH cuts to training grants are especially harmful at lower research active universities. SJSU had our U-RISE program (which we've had since 1988) cut, leaving students w 4 days notice of no stipend and cutting off an important way to get the research experience needed for PhD programs.
noamross.net
Just one example: In the past 2 weeks, NIH has terminated dozens of programs to support students pursuing scientific careers. These MARC or U-RISE (T34) grants provide rising undergraduates with opportunities and stipends to participate in science. Where are these programs? Not in the Ivy league:
A map showing colleges where T34 undergradaute training programs have been terminated by the NIH. Shown are: Spelman College
University Of Texas El Paso
University Of Alaska Anchorage
Texas State University
San Jose State University
Queens College

University Of Nevada Reno

Plus 30+ more unlabeled ones that are unconfirmed.

Two undergrads in my lab were URISE scholars. One is graduating, but the other was counting on the funds to support her tuition next year (as well as a paycheck). Accepting any recommendations for fellowships she can apply for. She is hispanic if that helps and interested in viral ecology.

Folks, while much of the attention is on Harvard and Columbia's response to the Trump/Musk/RFK Jr. administration, I'd like to point out how #NIH terminations and funding cuts go far beyond this war with the nations' elite universities. 🧵🧪

The NSF's flagship fellowship program typically gives offers to 2,000+ young scientists. This year, in the face of looming budget cuts, that number was halved: only 1,000 received an offer. Our story on what that means for the science talent pipeline: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

We've also had very good results - and ended up rerunning the assemblies with the raw data using Autocycler, which provided to also improve the overall assembly metrics and in some cases close the genomes.

🧪 NSF GRFP update!

New graduate NSF fellowships will likely be announced this week for the GRFP (see bottom of 🧵 for why).

First off, I'm *very* glad to hear of those going forward, given the otherwise bleak year so far for graduate training.

Some observations... 1/12
