Part of #Roman floor mosaic
3rd Century CE
Found 1899 - Karl-Marx-Straße/Jüdemerstraße #Trier

A lion striking a bull as its prey.

Originally 6.5 square metres in size, the surrounding pattern indicates it once would have had nine panels.

Church of St Odulph, Pillaton, Cornwall

15th Century granite west tower. Of 3 stages, with buttresses set back from the corners, an embattled parapet & pinnacles.

The Weary Friar pub perhaps dates to the 12th Century. There may be monastic links or former use as a church house.

An intentionally destroyed #BronzeAge #sword found in a burial at Blaubeuren-Asch. Bronze Age weapons deposited in burials were often bent or hacked into pieces before placed into the grave, in this way they 'died' with the owner. Dating 9th century BC.

Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés, #Paris

The church was destroyed at the time of the French Revolution.

Restored in the 19th Century by the French architect Victor Baltard, who was also responsible for the furnishings.

The font however is not attributed to any particular artist.

Roman bronze dragon’s head standard, AD 190-260.

Originally mounted on a pole, with a long fabric tube attached to the back of the head. When charging on horseback, the wind inflated the tube and the dragon shrieked!

An interesting thread 🧵 about local (Devon) history, in particular wills, but also male/female names.
@roaringmeg.bsky.social
Looking at the Tavistock wills in our sample ahead of a talk I am giving there on Friday.

The second earliest is the 1546 will of John Peryn, clerk of Tavistock. He leaves some nice material culture: his second best and best featherbeds, silver spoons with decorated knapps & a gilt goblet.
