Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, #Volterra

Reputedly produced nearly 800 years ago!

This wooden carving of five figures in “The Deposition from the Cross” was completed by an an anonymous artist in 1228.

The painting of the figures is somewhat later.

Wonderful - good to see.

Good - oh!
I feel I need to do some research on Sep Waugh & his stained glass.

Now … “Six degrees of separation”
The stained glass artist Harry Harvey (1922-2011) had two assistants, Ann Sotheran & Sep Waugh who went on to establish their own studios.
Later in life Harry Harvey was the artist for Barley Studios of York, Helen Whittaker MBE is the creative director there today!

Thanks. Good to know about your grandad - so appropriate that there is the link to cricket in the window.
#Pevsner guidebook says the north aisle window is by Sep Waugh of York, 1980.
He also did the lamb & flag in the east window. 2000. Ann Southeran had done the east window chalice & dove. 1987.

Yes, hoping for a fair bit of 🌞 in March. Cardiff Castle & a Gwen John exhibition are on the list for starters.

Great, although the church is rather plain we really enjoyed seeing the stained glass by Helen Whittaker.

The window in your church looks very interesting. It must be great that it is memory of your grandad & has the link to the “Old Father Time” weathervane at Lords.

Which church is it please?

Brilliant. Thank you for the tip Kirsty, we are in Cardiff in March & aim to visit the castle. Always on the lookout for ☕️&🍰😉

As for tiles - the Godwin brothers were so prolific! Definitely one for @oldpanks.bsky.social

#TilesOnTuesday From a small factory in the Herefordshire village of Lugwardine, William and Henry Godwin produced encaustic tiles which adorn cathedrals and churches all over the former British Empire and beyond, including their own parish church of St Peter.

😋 … the foods is great, but they position you next to the gift shop. 😉 Cue other purchases.
Yes, it can take a while to get there. We tend to travel in by train.

Thank you Simon.
We believe he fell through a gap in the floor of one of the towers?

I’m so sorry to read that about “over there”.

I have my Bluesky preference set as “discover” & find that exchanges with folks are cordial & humourus.

I am absolutely fine thank you - as I hope you are. Hopefully, we will be able to look forward to your future posts. 😄

Congratulations - the book sounds intriguing.
There is so much public interest in Harry Clarke - I wish you good luck.

Lunch was pretty good as well. 😉
