How do cats always land on their feet? Scientists believed they use the dropper's hand as a fulcrum until these images, captured at 12 frames per second, debunked that in 1894. More on the Falling Cat Problem here: publicdomainreview.org/collection/p...

We couldn't let World Handwriting Day go by without sharing Kathleen Lonsdale's penmanship ✍️

Lonsdale conducted pioneering research in X-ray crystallography and worked at the Ri. In 1929, she proved that the structure of benzene was flat—the chemical was also discovered here, by Michael Faraday.

It’s #CleanAirNight! Did you know that wood burning contributes to serious health conditions for people across the UK? Wood burning smoke produces fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5), which can cause heart & lung disease and increase your risk of diabetes and dementia when inhaled.

London is on track to be diesel‑free by 2026 — this is a huge win! ⚡️🚌🚲

BUT cleaner air won’t happen with EVs alone.

We need to invest in reliable public transport and protected cycling & walking routes to finally get fossil fuels off our streets.

Battery electric cars will overtake diesels in Great Britain by 2030, analysis suggests

One of the 1st sediment cores from Greenland shows a 500m thick ice dome melted entirely at warming similar to what we'll likely see by 2100.
"This is very direct evidence that the ice sheet is as sensitive as we feared to even a relatively small amount of warming." newscientist.com/article/2510...
Northern Greenland ice dome melted before and could melt again
Prudhoe Ice Dome disappeared during a warm period 7000 years ago. Global warming could cause similar temperatures by 2100, showing the ice sheet’s vulnerability

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Right now the gov is subsidising tax breaks, when they could be using that tax to generate billions for public services.
