must feel weird to get fired for the same reason you were hired
I never understood it - these people are totally without ethics. Why not just lie their way through confirmation? It's not like they can be removed for their lies after.
"Put simply, a significant share of the US’s “booming” economy is generated by sickness. Inefficiencies in its healthcare system may also prop up US GDP by sustaining high levels of costly healthcare-related expenditure"
hi @dereklowe.bsky.social: have been thinking about this article a lot & would love a Derek Lowe take on it. Tej Parikh argues that booming post pandemic US economy driven by bloated health expenditure; i.e. spending more for subpar outcomes is a feature, not a bug...

Read Jay Newman’s book Under Money and it really brings this into perspective.
Interest in amantadine for the treatment of ADHD was rekindled with the publication of the book “Delivered from Distraction” as it stated that Dr. Singer and Dr. Cohen from Harvard successfully treated over 400 children suffering from ADHD with amantadine.

Hi @dereklowe.bsky.social have you ever written about the polypharmacology of Amantadine? 1961 influenza drug that crosses the BBB & now used for CNS disorders? Limited studies showing same efficacy as methylphenidate for #ADHD without side effect profile.

Why is the Biden administration silent on the richest man in the world doing the bidding of Putin?

WHY IS HE STILL A FEDERAL GOVT CONTRACTOR???
With the sweeping powers that SCOTUS gave POTUS, is Biden really impotent when it comes to curtailing Musk? Something doesn’t add up. Imagine what Trump would do if he were in Biden’s shoes.

We cannot let a person who has a nematode in his brain, who was addicted to heroin for 14 years, and who drove his wife to take her own life, who has sexual assault allegations against him, and a fetish with dead animals – to make *any* kind of health decisions for *anyone*.

Surprising number of references to drug discovery in this article.

@dereklowe.bsky.social Can quantum computing make a big difference in revolutionizing drug discovery?
Google said its quantum computer needed less than five minutes to perform a mathematical calculation that one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers could not complete in 10 septillion years, a length of time that exceeds the age of the known universe.
Google Makes New Quantum Computing Breakthrough
Google unveiled an experimental machine capable of tasks that a traditional supercomputer could not master in 10 septillion years. (That’s older than the universe.)

Absolutely should spend time in Colombia. This country is pure magic - beautiful places to visit with a marvelous variety of climate and biodiversity. Gestemani/Cartagena, Santa Marta (Tayrona), Medellin, Bogota, Coffee Country (Manizales), the Amazon (Fly into Leticia and then head upriver).
This is such a poignant statement that I wish more people who worked for Tesla or SpaceX or OpenAI/Andruil could make this part of their ethos: "I didn't get into tech to build machines primarily used to kill more people more efficiently or help a few men amass billions."
Thank you @timnitgebru.bsky.social I have been wondering this for a long time: how to the tech workers enabling people like Musk feel? Is your view an outlier in Silicon Valley?
I was invited to write my reflection on what I thought was a critical moment in tech last year & what it means for the future of tech. I didn't get into tech to build machines primarily used to kill more people more efficiently or help a few men amass billions.
