I spent a number of years as a HIV nurse. By then, the meds meant people could live full lives, but the stigma still existed. And access to preventative measures & meds varies

Last night was our annual Our Faith Our Planet conference. Speakers shared perspectives from different faiths, read poems, gave updates on eco projects happening across Greater Manchester and delegates even had the opportunity to participate in a quiz!

In the next of our cathedral bells stories, Alexandra remembers how hearing them shortly after arriving from Hong Kong, helped her settle into this new city
It was Wednesday, July 17, 2024. The doors of the lift closed and descended from the 28th floor of the building. I felt grateful for Carmen's dinner. It seemed as if I could still smell the fried beef. Before she moved to England, she was a church-mate of my secondary school classmate. I met her in person for the first time only 40 days ago when I walked into the arrival hall of the Manchester Airport after the 14-hour flight with my buddy, a little toy bear in a blue shirt. I was going to move into an apartment in the same building on Sunday, putting an end to my "hotel-long-stay life". Three days ago, the leasing office staff showed me the rented apartment, which was in fact much more spacious and bright than the one I saw in the video. Let me thank the apartment for choosing me. I had bought a thick blanket and some basic kitchenware, which were now temporary stored at Carmen's home. Tomorrow, I had to get up at 5 am so as to wash the bedding in the hotel-guest self-service laundry room, which was used to be busy in the evening. What else I had to buy and to prepare? Settling up a new home and a new life in this unfamiliar city and unfamiliar country was a big challenge. Could I do so all by myself? Yes, I could. In the past 2 years, to prepare for this move, I had completed so many new tasks that I had never thought of. Yet, when the lift was descending, I still felt as if my heart was floating in the air. I left the building, and soon by-passed the Sainsbury Local. It was fresh but much cooler than the summer in Hong Kong. I reached the Victoria Bridge. The chill and the blue sky brought me back to reality. I soon realised that the bells of the Manchester Cathedral had filled the evening air. Why did the bells ring at this time of the evening? This place was interesting: a busy city centre but with the sound of the cathedral bells. While the future was uncertain, I would go on and try my best.

As we continue to share stories and memories of our cathedral bells, Hanni tells us why they mean so much to her and her husband Jack, who were married in the cathedral this summer

Join us on Nov 10th at 6.30pm as we launch our new bell appeal!
The bells at Manchester Cathedral will always hold a special place in both my husbands and my heart. We recently got married in July & it was one of the happiest days of our lives. There were so many special moments throughout the day, but the crowd that the Church bells drew in outside the Cathedral created such an incredible atmosphere for both us and our guests. As the bride, I remember getting closer to the Cathedral and hearing the bells for the first time on our wedding day, I had such a flutter of excitement and couldn't believe how many had gathered outside! When we were officially married, the bells rang again and there was so much happiness and love from our families and guests as confetti was thrown. We're both so privileged to go back to that special day with every Sunday we attend church and hear the bells ring!!

28 October 1787 Abolitionist Thomas Clarkson preached a sermon at the now @mancathedral.bsky.social invited by local campaigners. The speech rallied the people of Manchester against the slave trade. Within months Manchester had initiated UK’s first mass anti-slave trade petition campaign.

On Nov 10th, we are launching a special appeal for our bells. The sound of church bells is very special and we will be sharing some stories and memories people have of the cathedral bells over the next few months

We begin with Basil, who has found solace and hope in the sound of the bells ringing
A CHIME FOR MANCHESTER I commenced worship at the cathedral in 1999 when my mother became very ill. She passed away that November, aged 88. I was her sole carer, a single man, for more than 30 years. Then, in August 2019 Marina and I were married at the cathedral! On arriving at the cathedral on Sunday mornings I could hear the peal of bells from a distance. This meant so much to me as the peal offered something eternal, solace and the truth for all of eternity as does the eucharist. Such is the meaning of the church bells.

We are delighted to have Solomon with us for a long term placement and pray for his continuing development as he prepares for ordained ministry

Members of the cathedral staff, volunteers and clergy, were able to get a tour of Salford Cathedral, which is nearing the end of its restoration

Great to see the building being lovingly restored, with investment in sustainable features

As well as beautiful restoration, they have invested in ways to make the cathedral as sustainable as possible, whilst retaining the beauty of the heritage
The East end. Ceiling hand painted with stencils, all paint on the stonework removed to reveal the beautiful stone pillars. New altar being made- previous one is being donated to another church. Stained glass all cleaned, with a film being applied to aid insulation Painting done to reflect the four evangelists. Hatch in the centre allows access to roof for maintenance. All the work has been done in a way that ensures good maintenance can be done easily On the south side, this will be the chapel of the blessed sacrament and will have a glazed screen to help people who want to pray in private Underneath is a new underfloor heating system, powered by newly installed ground source heat oumps

We are grateful to Mr Rob Knight and to Canon Jo Calladine, chaplain, from HMP Manchester for joining us. Canon Jo talked about giving thanks, a theme addressed in Sunday School. And then, an engaging Bible study as the group continued to explore the book of Job
