First post... Science policy nerd. Former fed and White House #45 and #46 alum working on natural hazards... Still & always a public servant. Lover of public lands (esp. #GrandStaircase), the #Orioles, and #Caps. Hoping to see my hometown of DC and the nation survive (again) a tumultuous 4 yrs.
View of a Utah slot canyon with people. Undulating walls of tan sandstone tower over 3 people (a father and 2 children), with a small creek beneath their feet. Willis Creek in Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument. White woman with brown hair holding an orange sign with white text stating, "Save Grand Staircase." One of several people in the image holding signs in front of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (next door to the White House) at a protest in December 2017.

Time to show our support.

#FEMA folks are organizing a rally. It’s a ways off but let’s save the date. Share this shamelessly & let everyone know whether it’s your fellow FEMA employees or allies in the DMV area.

As if irony isn’t already dead, the Hatch Act violation on the DOJ website, which blames Democrats for the shutdown, appears on the page advising DOJ employees they are subject to the Hatch Act. joycevance.substack.com/p/a-note-abo...

I know we say this a lot, but seriously, what is wrong with people???

Let’s catch this guy:

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is searching for a man wanted for allegedly decapitating a sea lion in Pacific Grove.”

Point Pinos Beach, Pacific Grove, CA.

I know your comments were in the context of earthquakes, but this quote from Gilbert White more than 80 years ago will always resonate:

"Floods are 'acts of God,' but flood losses are largely acts of man."

NOAA provides an array of products & services to help local-level officials understand and act to prevent adverse impacts of climate change. The precip data are moving fwd (so far). We also need to protect other things. Reauth of Digital Coast Act can help. Get the word out and support that!

This one really hurts. I’m sorry.

I have no words. Just tears. Jail or euthanasia for the homeless?

Brian Kilmeade endorses euthanizing homeless people: "Involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill them."

Extraction is the new conservation…because it conserves the positive inflow of money into the bank accounts of those doing the extracting. Didn’t you get the memo?

“[O]ne of the worst moments in recent American history…” What?!? If your history spans the lifespan of a fruit fly, maybe. Delete your account.

It’s remarkable how many times per day I say, “I really don’t care. Next.”

The A Team — even though this new committee is 💯 political theater. None are afraid to call a spade a spade, including my Congressman, Rep. Jamie Raskin @raskin.house.gov

Hakeem Jeffries has appointed Eric Swalwell, Jasmine Crockett, Jared Moskowitz and Jamie Raskin to serve as the democratic members on the new January 6th committee. What great choices in my opinion, all four of these members will fight to make sure the truth is not whitewashed.

And …as @marhon.bsky.social pointed out on original post.
The 26% statistic does not not anticipate development (increased impervious surface), erosion/channel change, or climate impacts on rainfall and sea level rise.

#NOS and #OAR #SeaGrant. Zero budgeting OAR doesn’t kill just climate research! It hampers some of the most effective local-level extension agents who advise on many issues, including #CoastalHazards. They’ve earned the trust of the communities they serve.

If located in the 1%-annual-chance (100-year) floodplain… Which in most cases is a 1% floodplain determined looking only in the rearview mirror, not anticipating development (increased impervious surface), erosion/channel change, or climate impacts on rainfall and sea level.

Still lots of friends on the inside across many LOs, especially NOS and NESDIS. Many others extorted into retirement. Tough for all — thanks for hanging in there. Will always show up for y’all.

The Department of Energy hired five academics to raise doubts about climate change. 85+ climate experts (organized by @andrewdessler.com) reviewed their report. Our conclusion, detailed in 450 pages of analysis: it is biased, full of errors, and not fit to inform policy making.

On July 29, 2025, the Department of Energy (DOE) published a report from its Climate Working Group (CWG). This report features prominently in the EPA's reconsideration of its 2009 Endangerment Finding...

You can step off. This is a long-standing issue. I spent wks on the ground in MS supporting recovery. So many survivors felt ignored and overshadowed by what was happening in New Orleans. That erasure was perpetuated throughout recovery. It’s not hard for our media to be accurate and inclusive.
marhon.bsky.social
Did you see the Nat Geo documentary on Katrina? Absolutely appropriate to document the horrific suffering and response in New Orleans and surrounding parishes. And that was it.
marhon.bsky.social
First line says storm hit Louisiana. It did not just hit Louisiana. Later mention doesn’t negate the omission in this sentence.
marhon.bsky.social
What a glaring omission to only say Katrina hit Louisiana. In Mississippi, hundred died, thousands of homes were lost, and infrastructure damage was in the billions. The scale of destruction in LA was massive, but you ought not erase others’ suffering.
