The amazing thing about the hundreds of billions of dollars being spent on AI development is it doesn't even include all the externalized costs like higher electricity prices for hundreds of millions of people.
AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

Housing Secretary Scott Turner wants to build-baby-build. But so far his tenure at HUD has looked more like slash-slash-slash — with plunging numbers for staff, grants and proposed funding.

@sarahholder.bsky.social and I profiled Turner and his unorthodox agenda: www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
Trump’s Housing Chief Wants to Build, But With What?
HUD Secretary Scott Turner says it’s time to put millions more Americans in homes. He’s also standing by while his agency’s staff and funding disappear.

In a new excerpt from "The Unfinished Metropolis," I lay out the book's high-level argument:

American cities are stuck in a mid-20th century pattern of urban development. As a result, we've been unable to tame the enormous challenges that this pattern perpetuates.
American cities have stagnated. We’re all suffering for it.
Many of the nation’s greatest challenges are rooted in the built environment itself. To change our circumstances, we need to change our cities.

NJ Transit's official data makes it difficult to tell just how bad it is. So @suryamattu.com and I spent three months collecting the raw location data for more than 190,000 trains on NJT, Metro-North, and LIRR. Then @mariepastora.bsky.social made the graphics to show you. The answer: Very bad.
NJ Transit Is NYC’s Least Reliable Commuter Rail — By a Long Shot
An analysis of real-time train data shows its passengers face major service disruptions at six times the rate of riders on other NYC commuter railways.

American cities have stagnated. Residential neighborhoods, transportation systems, and commercial districts have changed little in 50+ years.

My new book, "The Unfinished Metropolis," explores how that happened — and how to fix it.

From the vantage point of the US, you might think a WFH slump for transit was inevitable. But data from around the world shows that's not true.

The NYPD has quietly changed its enforcement policy towards bicyclists, slapping them with criminal summonses instead of regular traffic tickets for low-level offenses such as passing through red lights or not stopping at a stop sign.
