Next off the shelf...
'Enlightenment', (2024) Sarah Perry.
I've heard a lot of good things about this one. Gothic fiction, apparently. And a comet 😱👻☄️ 🔭
'Passion and scientific adventure'! Bring it on!
The blurb...
#BookSky 📚💙
Blue cover depicting a comet with a long, luminous tale stretching across the sky, past stars and curves depicting celestial orbits of planets, and comets, and other objects. A dark figure observes the sky from the edge of a wood. The blurb.
From the prize-winning author of the Essex Serpent. 'An exhilarating exploration of the heavens, comets, faith, ghosts, love... This is a book of deep pleasures.' Booker Prize judges, 2024.
Thomas Hart and Grace Maccauley have lived all their lives in the small Essex town of Aldleigh. Though separated in age by three decades, the pair are kindred spirits - torn between their religion and their desire to explore the world. But their friendship is ruptured by the arrival of love.
Over the course of twenty years, Thomas and Grace will find their lives brought back into orbit as a devastating story of passion and scientific adventure unfolds and Aldleigh's unique mysteries are revealed.

Next book off the shelf...
'Murder at the Black Cat Cafe' (1947/Trans2025), Seishi Yokomizo.
I lasted 50pp & donated it to the village phonebox library. Dreadful. Maybe the translation, or maybe it's as thin & boring in the original?
For a far better Japanese read try Seichō Matsumoto

While still waiting for the call from Norway, Trump hears that the Nobel committee have instead awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan democracy activist María Corina Machado.

It's not you it's me. I'll be kind.
The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy is still, 46 years on, an enjoyable & speedy read. But IMO it becomes 'of its time' like Monty Python, & glam rock. Sure, it made me smile. Happy times. Simpler world. One to take with me to the Sunshine Home.

My next book off the shelf needs no introduction...
'The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy', 1979, by the late, great, & all too soon whisked away Douglas Adams.
A welcome re-read. A new issue to replace my 40 yo, much fingered & time abused copy.

... and a robot makes off with all the riches in a fast ship, leaving the solar system to begin a new life in a glitzy arm of the galaxy, to a place where taxes are low, the wealth gap cosmic, shanty dwellers many, & parking orbits chock-full of star-yachts at anchor.

The great inflation of AI valuation is the excitement in speculating how much profit it will generate…
The “pop” is going to be seeing it start to make money, but realizing how much less it will make than tech-bros fantasized.

Hold on, hang the futtock on ... two of these attractions are at least a quarter day's coach journey from Stratford-upon-Avon, and that's on a good day.

Also, whenever the government (whether Conservative or Labour) has tinkered with stamp duty in recent years, the net result has seen house prices rise.
Perhaps limit any changes to the various stamp duty bands to account for RPI only, & pin the genuine first-time buyer's zero rating to average price

None of this will actually come to pass, of course.
Tories Out! And stay out! At least for a generation, by which time the last of their more right-wing colleagues will have either joined Farage's Oblivion Express, or quit politics.

I am the proud owner of a new pentland shed.
In the foreground is Walpole the Pig, the master of the bottom patio, who, slowly rotting away, having lost one ear and one leg and now propped up on bricks, is home to a multitude of insects.
A timber pentland shed sitting on a patio alomgside a bench and a wooden pig, all on the shade of a beech tree.

Prof. Gurdon was Master at Magdalene when I was an undergraduate. I remember trying to make small talk while he had students over (generously) for Sunday lunch. But I also remember him making a magnificent job of introducing Nelson Mandela, who was being made an honorary fellow of the college..(1/n)

Also, though I remain Team Jasmine, I thought Lesley more deserving of Star Baker tonight. Her showstopper was truly 3D & tasted grrrrrreat. #GBBO

It's pastry week on The Great British Bake Off, & I have no idea who will be exiting the tent tonight - they're all so good.
So it'll be down to someone's medieval castle showstopper ending up like this. #GBBO

Also, that second wall on Only Connect! Like the Keyboard Worriers, we didn't have a scooby.

Disappointing performance. Only 7 questions answered correctly - shouted out before both the sofa & studio opposition (& there's 2 teams of bright young things in the studio). I now trail 6-7.
Never look pleased when you think you're on a winner just because the teams are stuffed with scientists.

Coming up on Quizzy Monday - University Challenge. After 12 matches it is all square, 6 all in our sofa competition.
We are pretty well matched. Both going gaga at the same rate.
Followed by recording of Only Connect as the BBC refuse to reinstate the proper order of things. Team game is second!
