Herbie Nichols was born in NYC on this day January 3, 1919. One of the most original & under-recognized pianists/composers in Jazz history, Nichols recorded his incredibly hip, angular compositions like "The Third World" & "2300 Skiddoo" for Blue Note in the 1950s: store.bluenote.com/collections/...

Archives are out of style in the humanities? WTAF
Not for historians!
(and NB the most time I ever spent in archives was in literary archives)

Since 2017, @historians.org has issued multiple statements of concern regarding threats to the preservation of the national history in archives
I know archives are suddenly out of style in the humanities again, but when you think about media preservation as a wing of memory research, all of the fine logistics take on more urgency and import.

Self Promotion Sunday…Motian. Trio Eclectic was inspired by the Paul Motian Trio. It has since evolved into something uniquely ours. Jazz isn’t about copying the greats, rather being inspired by them, then finding your own voice. But this is my tribute to Paul Motian. #jazzsky youtu.be/UTFcZgXtwe8

Self Promotion Sunday…Dark Sketch. We decided to do this Duane Allen original as a vignette. It’s the only time I’ve done overdubs on an album as I heard a 2nd voice interacting with the melody. Come to think about it, I think that gives me partial composition credit. #jazzsky youtu.be/r21VM41R8ms

"Christy Brown, a clown around town
Now a man of renown, from Dingle to Down
I can type with me toes, suck stout through me nose
And where it's gonna end, God only knows

Down all the days
The tap-tap-tapping of the typewriter pays
The gentle rattling of the drays
Down all the days"
