But back to Enger. I’m glad I gave ICR a second go. Maybe I just needed to be in a world a little bit closer to apocalypse, who knows, but it’s a great story.

There is kindness and gentleness and hope and perseverance in the face of suffering and evil, and we should do more of that.

I decided to give it another chance a little bit ago, after giving Asako Yuzuki’s BUTTER a second chance, and being glad I did.

And maybe that’s the moral of the story, sometimes books deserve additional chances.

So last year I picked up Leif Enger’s I CHEERFULLY REFUSE from B&N and, maybe 20% of the way in, set it down. At the time I couldn’t get past the setup (post-apocalyptic worlds are kind of hard to do convincingly).

happy halloween i am ready to confuse some trick-or-treaters

We both really enjoyed it, I thought it was a good bit of fun. Enjoyed the styling and nods to older thriller/slasher flicks (PSYCHO, etc.).

I wondered if it would get too intense for Abby but she was into it the whole time.

We just got back from it. It’s fallen to single pre-noon screening at most of the places around us, so we did the 11:05 at Tysons after Silver Diner breakfast and some back to school shopping.
