The teenager told officers he was a U.S. citizen, but an officer broke the car’s driver’s side window and detained him. In a video, the boy can be heard telling an officer that he is a citizen, to which the officer replies, “Get out of the car” and “I don’t care.”

Coming soon (4 December), another issue of Gone Lawn, this one puffed up with fiction. Great stuff! We can't wait to show it to you all. In the meantime, send us you stuff, especially if you have novel/novella excerpts (≤200 words) you think we'd love, for #63

The bit in the headline about old-fashioned web search made me, an old, sort of think of Charlotte’s Web even tho that’s silly
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Learning With AI Falls Short Compared to Old-Fashioned Web Search
In virtually all the ways that matter, getting summarized information from AI models was less educational than doing the work of search.

My middle school kid is reading Maus, which prompted me, a slightly braggadocious former A&E journalist, to say oh hey I interviewed Art Spiegelman back before you were born. My kid seemed impressed, then said, “Wait—is Maus THAT old of a book?!”

In a couple weeks I’m going to have a moody little quirk of a story in @gonelawn.bsky.social and I’m getting so excited ✨

A year ago for my 50th birthday I went to California to see the redwoods. It changed me & how I think about the world. I can’t wait to go back again someday.

I know I should probably play it cool but I can’t — I’ve had 10 acceptances this year. My best year ever (& I’ll be 51 soon). I’ve got 5 pieces forthcoming in 4 journals. I’m not ok. I’m bordering on great. And as a Scorpio I’m usually moody or meh. But wow. Today I’m happily agog. And so grateful 🌿

Acceptance post! 🎉🎉 Super excited to say I have 2 micros forthcoming from @templeinacity.bsky.social.
If you haven’t checked out the journal lately, their current issue is a knockout. Also, they’re open for submissions until Nov. 15!

Philly! Please vote tomorrow.
It’s one of those big ballots and many boxes are yes/no, not just GOP or DNC. Here are some links to help you navigate it. Very important to vote YES to retain all three PA Supreme Court judges, as shown below:

I re-read this fantastic book of flash fiction in October and realized it’s been 10 years since it was published. I also recalled hosting Helen for a reading from it ages ago at Tattooed Mom in Philly. Which is all to say —Happy 10-year Book Birthday to @helenmcclory.bsky.social 🎉

On top of today being an amazing celebration of candy excess and people wearing masks for joyous and scary non-fascist reasons, I cast my ballot by mail today and it felt very meh and normal, the way democracy should be.

I know the political news is, by GOP design, hitting people like a firehose each day. But on top of the shutdown, and the impending end of SNAP benefits, and ICE terror in our streets, the DOGE cuts are still happening too, just more quietly than before. Musk and DOGE should live in infamy.

Gone Lawn is one of those foundational lit mags that’s been around since before I started publishing & consistently puts out interesting work. If you can donate something to keep it viable, now’s the time.
Hate this sort of thing.

Dark times keep getting darker. If you like Gone Lawn and you have the means, consider a donation to keep us going, even something small. Thank you.
