Happy New Year everyone!
If your New Year's resolution was to read more books, or learn more stuff, then my book 100 BIBLE FILMS might be just the ticket.
It's wide-ranging, easy to read & beautifully illustrated. It also won an academic choice award.
Hope you have a smashing 2025!

Here is an excerpt from my conversation with @mattpagefilm.bsky.social about PORCO ROSSO for The Complete Catalog: Studio Ghibli. Links in quoted post!

I really enjoyed chatting to @ettletodd.bsky.social about Ghibli’s PORCO ROSSO. Talking about a film in depth like this is a great way to notice new things that you might not have thought of otherwise
Studio Ghibli E12 of The Complete Catalog is live! @mattpagefilm.bsky.social and I talk PORCO ROSSO, ranging from its personal connections to its director Hayao Miyazaki to its exceptional qualities as a "genre picture" like Old Hollywood films of yore, and beyond. Links 👇

Fun Mary & Joseph musical JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM (2023) is just £4 to purchase digital download at the moment at Amazon UK. It's without a UK physical format release so worth a punt.

Great win for Leeds against Chelsea. Fantastic strike from Tanaka. Also nice to see Gabby Logan slipping in a #MOT ON #MOTD.

Controversial, but, I’m about halfway through my first viewing of MY DNNER WITH ANDRE. I’m not sure I’m staying for dessert.

The first academic book on #TheChosen has arrived with 2 seasons still to air. It co-writer by one of the show’s theological advisors & endorsed by Dallas Jenkins so I’m not expecting to be critical. Interesting that it coincides with the first #SBL session on The Chosen as well.

Ace thread of silent film women comedians
Since we are once again dealing with "the only silent era comedians of note were men" I feel I need to stand up for the ladies.

Just watching the Italian Politiziotesci and it seems that they just rolled a car down Rome's famous Spanish Steps. Not sure if this is a sign of how much things have changed with cultural landmarks, or whether it was just clever special effects.

FKA Twigs being in a film with Nick Cage seems like as unlikely a pairing since BRANIGAN featured both John Wayne and Tony Robinson.

Ingrid Bergman wakes up after her long dark night of the soul on Stromboli. White flecks sparkle in the volcanic desert beneath her, as if the stars she gazed at the night before had descended to earth. She faces the morning sun with both awe and fear; it re-energises her, but also overwhelms her.

A disturbing scene from La notte: Marcello Mastroianni inspects a young woman in her hospital room. In this moment, he is a hollow man who casts no shadow; her shadow seems an integral part of her, an extension of the darkness in (and behind) her eyes, and a commentary on the surrounding white void.

I had my 1st viewing of THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (1957) last night for #Noirvember. i'm not 100% sure it qualifies, but if it's good enough for Alain Silver andElizabeth Ward, it's good enough for me. Great film whose sumptious photography reminds me of why noir really appeals to me.

Just watching SAINT MAUD (Rose Glass, 2019) set and shot, with a good deal of intention, in Scarborough on the N Yorkshire coast. Does anyone know of any other films set / shot there?

The new Robin Hood series sounds interesting if only because it’s set during the rule of Henry II & Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Robin Hood review – Sean Bean gifts us the most gloriously bad TV offering of the year
It ticks every box you could wish for in your olde worlde trash: Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham, faerie smut … and not a bad wig in sight! Hurrah!

I followed this up by watching CARRIE (De Palma, 1976) unintentionally creating a weird double bill of 1976 films set in America about young women and the chasm between them and their mothers.
Eerie moment when the Twin Towers creep into the edge of the incredible final shot of Chantal Akerman's NEWS FROM HOME (1976).
