The Giants announced that former top prospect Marco Luciano was claimed off waivers by the Pirates. They now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

People are surprised by the Lucchesi move, but he had a 3.97 FIP, a 4.06 xFIP, a low strikeout rate, not much life on his fastball, and no options. So I get it. Giants have fallen behind the times with bullpen velocity, and need to start changing that.

The Giants didn't shield any eligible players from the Rule 5 draft by adding them to the 40-man prior to the reserve list deadline. The Giants are at 40 but had several DFA candidates. The bigger issue: former 1st rounders like Will Bednar, Reggie Crawford and Hunter Bishop haven't panned out.

Deadline has passed for Rule 5 protections and no word on the Giants making any moves. Could just be delayed, but seems likely they didn't protect anyone. Not really a surprise, their most likely candidates were pitchers and the 40 is overflowing with them as is.
