During warm winters & winters with rain-on-snow, snow melts/refreezes creating ice layers hard for reindeer to dig through to fodder. Comparing weather data with reindeer births in Scandinavia shows birth rates drop after winters with lots of rain-on-snow events.

The recent climate-change silence by Democratic leaders (ie gaming their climate-change politics) must be judged in light of what scientists have warned for years: Civilization is hurtling toward catastrophe with the only escape being phasing out fossil fuels ASAP.

Amidst all the Trump hellishness yet another “show me your papers” moment(?), as you enter the most popular US national parks, staff now will ask “Are you an American citizen?” (DOI says the question is confirm whether to charge the visitor a nonresident fee.)

Trump Admin has now proposed to speed permitting process for large projects, incl oil/gas pipelines & AI facilities, by reducing states’ & tribes’ authority to approve, limit or reject, federal permits for projects that will pollute waterways.

Though California has been quite (rain) wet so far this water yr, its worth noting that it was dry enough in the south 2/3 of state last yr so that current odds of making up the last-yr-plus-this-yr deficits by end of this water yr are small except in northern parts.

Globally, paired-forests study shows deforestation intensified drought in >52% boreal regions, w/drought prevalence rising by 5% from 2001-2020, while deforested tropical regions showed greater resilience, w/~40% of drought intensification mitigated.
