Comet 240P/NEAT has now a small fragment (B) that is bright enough to be seen with modest telescopes. The nucleus shines at about mag 12 while B is two magnitudes fainter. #cometWatch #astrophotography

This month I spent almost all my time looking for Arabic observations of bright comets. I uncovered close to 45 records ,some possibly previously unknown ,but sadly, the majority lacked detail, typically only mentioning when the comet appeared and giving no information about its position in the sky.

It's interesting that this period is close to the possible return of the de Cheseaux comet in 1402 (according to the study), but it is difficult to determine whether it was the same comet or other bright comets observed between 1029 and 1030.

In the old Arabic book ‘Aqd al-Juman, it is reported that a comet appeared in 684 AH. The astronomer Imad al-Din said it had the same appearance as a comet seen at the birth of Caliph al-Mustansir around ~420 AH / 1030/1031 CE,he described it as having three great tails,the third being the shortest.
