Sooo many new folks, I guess it’s time to share this again. Hello!
Hi, new skootuals! I’m an Egyptologist by training, writer by vocation. I probably talk about my debut novel too much. Giant nerd about Egyptology, 1930s American pop culture, & the history of spiritualism. Will happily talk your ear off about PG Wodehouse, Cab Calloway, or Gef the Talking Mongoose.

This has been a year of many questions that I, as a parent, never anticipated having to answer.

Case in point: “Mom, why are the kids at my school saying that the president ‘performed fellatio on a horse’?”

Help, I can’t stop laughing at this guy’s face (spotted at the vintage store where I had an author event today)

Every time I scroll past it in my photo gallery I lose it again

I’ve been reading NYT articles from the 1890s for research, and it really feels like their standard of journalistic integrity has come full circle since then.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

Yeah, this is my feeling about the whole thing. I don’t trust MTG or fully understand what is motivating her current behavior, but it seems like a good thing no matter how you slice it.

TIL that a giant TERRIFYING ELEPHANT BUILDING used to dominate the Coney Island landscape in the late 1800s. It started as a hotel, very quickly became a brothel, and eventually burned down under mysterious circumstances. The dude who built it thought animal bldgs were the future of architecture.

Due to an ongoing series of incredibly unfortunate events surrounding my publisher, I may need to shelve my current draft for now. 😞 But I have another project in the works that I’m starting to get excited about. Been chewing on it for a couple of years, but I *think* I’m actually cooking now!

Is it possible to develop dimples later in life when you didn’t have them before? Why didn’t anyone tell me this was a thing that can happen?

Update: apparently she was so distracted by my headgear that the didn’t even *notice* the makeup. I did the weird overdrawn ‘50s vamp lips for nothing! Nobody appreciates the face of a real stah anymore…
Just scared the crap out of my kid by bursting into her room in full Norma Desmond-style makeup and a silk turban with the tackiest costume jewelry brooch I could find pinned to the front of it. God, I love Halloween

Watching the Stargate movie as an Egyptologist is a damn trip because it’s 99% ridiculous ancient aliens nonsense, 1% *meticulous attention to linguistic detail*

This is very silly and I should be working on literally anything else right now, but I need art therapy, damn it. Will I ever finish it? Remains to be seen.

Other topics that are presumably off limits now:
-Hatshepsut (well, a LOT of Egyptological stuff, actually)
-The works of L. Frank Baum
-The Talmud
-1920s fashion
-Freudian psychoanalysis
This means that marine biology classes cannot discuss, say, parrot fish.

(Parrot fish typically start out as female, then later say, you know, I've had enough of this, and turn male, all while munching away with powerful teeth on coral.)
A Texas public university administrator's notes for a meeting with faculty.

"No daylight": faculty "cannot discuss or teach anything regarding transgender - only male and female." They must "scrub" syllabi for "transgender items."

And keep everything out of writing: "Don't email; talk directly."
