I once got a "Cheer up, it might never happen" on the way from burying my aunt's ashes to the post-burial family meal. The guy who said it got rather an earful, and my dad got a shock learning that men say that sort of thing to women

Can any fellow CILIP members provide information on Resolution 2 for the AGM vote? There is no information about why this is proposed or what it means, and I don't want to vote without knowing what I'm voting for. (Proposal to increase no. of non-members allowed to be co-opted to Board from 3 to 5)

Oh, very nice! We were hoping to get that on our train when we go on holiday, but they don't operate them on weekends :(

I haven't done that section, but I will say from cycling alongside the Northern Bypass is that I struggled when I was cycling the opposite way to the traffic when you need lights on - the oncoming car lights were distracting and disorienting for me

Without a librarian it's just a book storage area, not a library
cilip.bsky.social
We agree but add this: the #GreatSchoolLibraries campaign highlights that all children need a school library because adequately funded, staffed school libraries deliver enhanced & independent learning as well as reading & curriculum support & contribute to building lifelong readers. #Staffed

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

I'm not a huge fan, to be honest, but different people have different views on it - my friend was totally fine with it. I much preferred the driving in Japan, as they drive on the left (and would definitely recommend a road trip there)
megsier.bsky.social
I have to admit, when me and a friend did a road trip in New England, we were bewildered by all the information about how difficult driving in Boston is - it's no different to most UK cities, really! I'd guess it's because of the lack of grid system causing confusion if that's what you're used to

Today is #HobbitDay because both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins were born on September 22nd. Normally we'd shire a hobbit pun or two but it might just feel like a tolkien gesture and we don't want to embarrass our elves. Anyway come and boromir #Tolkien books.

We want the media and politicians to recognise that there is a large number of women who are supportive of the trans+ community. We call on them to report truthfully about the sources of violence against women and to address the systems that perpetuate harm. notinourname.org.uk/petition/not...

Do you think they'll change the name to be fruit-based, to fit with the other pubs?!

That's a shame - I really liked the unusual space that George Street Social offered, being somewhere between a cafe and a bar. You could go in for a coffee or a boozy dinner and anything in between

NOTHING will prepare you for this 45-second story arc. From "I'm just doing this because I love the flag, it's totally grassroots, and I'm not part of anything political"... to who actually gave him the flags the night before.

Anyone who believes it is an innocent movement needs to see this.

Fuck Linehan and fuck any news outlets framing his hate as "activism" or "just saying" or "debating". Trans women are women, trans men are men, trans rights are human rights.

It would be amazing if the Town Hall was treated as a community asset that encourages events for the people of oxford. Unfortunately those running it seem to only be interested in weddings and awards dinners, to the detriment of events that residents actually benefit from

I wrote to M&S about the stupid lingerie department story - confirms nobody offered a bra fitting to a teenage girl. The Telegraph and JK can (always) do one.
Screenshot of an email: Hi Rachel,

Thank you for contacting us about the article you’ve seen.

We want our stores to be inclusive and welcoming places for our colleagues and customers. We have written to this customer and explained that our colleagues typically work across all departments in our stores and customers can always ask to speak to the colleague they feel most comfortable with.

We also explained that our colleague was asking a customer if they needed help; they were not working on bra fit or offering this.

Thank you again for getting in touch.

DV is so normalised that some of the few men who've done time for it get to cheerily get on with careers in entertainment, the press & as MPs but we're putting all this effort into pushing a minority who have nothing to do with that out of existence & pretending it'll fix things? Grow up, Britain.

New post on how we use #ImposterSyndrome when perhaps we mean #TrespasserSyndrome. 📚

My colleague Raj Mann introduced me to this new term and I can't get it out of my head. I think 'Imposter Syndrome' is a potentially harmful term we should stop misusing in Higher Ed, libraries & elsewhere...

🧵>>
It might not be Imposter Syndrome... We need to talk about Trespasser Syndrome — Ned Potter
Back in 2014 I wrote on this blog that Imposter Syndrome ran through librarianship like a vein. Writing now in 2025, I consider that a misdiagnosis. Imposter Syndrome is defined as a psychological co...

Based on the figures quoted by this Murdoch shitrag to drum-up anti-immigrant sentiment, foreign-born residents (and citizens!) are 15.5% less likely to be criminals, and 28% less likely to be sex offenders.

You're welcome.
benansell.bsky.social
Others have noted that this means foreign-born people are LESS likely than UK-born people to be in prison. What I want to note is that The Times is now referring to foreign-born UK citizens as ‘foreigners’. This includes Boris Johnson, Sir Mo Farah, Emma Watson, Rory Stewart and little old me.
