It really works in Higurashi because you're put in the headspace of mentally ill teenagers who would retrace their thoughts over and over again then you read something else and realize that's just how he writes

Ryukishi's writing style is to subtly, deftly tackle the nuances of a subject matter increasingly loudly til he's violently hitting you in the head w/ the thesis in case you didn't get it yet. He wants to have a nuanced 3D exploration but also really wants you to get what he's saying. It's endearing

Fully reading Onikakushi again years after I first read it to completion really highlights just how much its horror is effective at subverting misogynistic, classist and ableist tropes by playing into them entirely while at the same time being very on the nose about the horrors of fascism

This is my favorite besides the true route for sure. Never actually heard of people disliking it. I also got it first and the first half is really great for establishing the mystery when you don't know anything that's going on yet. Lucia is a cool character and should come up more in 07 discussions

I love this line unironically. Keiichi is just making instant assumptions about someone based on the fact they have a disorder because he's primed to. This and the TIP about the DID talk show episode subtly set up the themes about mental illness and society's treatment very early on
