Linguist, long storyteller. Ask me about stuff, but flee immediately if I say “how much do you want to know about this?”

I’m glad I’m not the only person who occasionally rereads this piece for unknown reasons.

Actually, this Reagan-era judge bench slap thing feels VERY much like Elrond finally dragging his actual blacksmith ass to work the shards of Narsil at the 11th hour (why didn’t he do that IMMEDIATELY after he called the Council????)

When Éomer is screaming because he thinks Éowyn died on the Pelennor Fields is what my heart is doing every time I see even a single News. Someone please reforge the sword and give us all some dang hope.

All this to say, I’m really stoked about this unique little publication and I can’t wait to share it!!!

Sounds a bit flippant (or at least very ADHD) to say I wrote an article in 48 hours, but it was for data that I’d been meticulously collecting for nearly 10 years with no real idea what to do with it until early this year. Losing track of the deadline is on me, but so was pulling it off in the end.

It’s also a win because it was WAY over the word limit but the revisions are basically “write more here, be less concise there, add that critical discussion section you wanted” 🤩🤩
melodyannross.bsky.social
This one is an especially big win, because I wrote the entire thing in 48 hours while my partner was out of the country with his sibling so I was single-parenting AND prepping for a houseguest.

Girls will be like ‘I really really needed this’ and it’s literally just “ACCEPTED WITH MINOR REVISIONS”

The cleaning of the world’s largest #Roman floor mosaic, covering around 1050 sqm. It was discovered during the construction of a hotel in Antakya/Turkey. The shifting of the ground during an earthquake has caused a a ripple effect.

A person cleans a large ancient mosaic floor inside a modern building, carefully working on the patterned geometric tiles. The mosaic features intricate designs in multiple colors, while contemporary railings and walkways are visible in the background.

I missed literally every single talk (and about 25% of the 2 plenaries I was able to sit in on), but I gather that stickers got a lot of love this year!

Before I sign off for a little while, a little view of my #Linguisticlandscape as I waited for a tram (yes, heading to work on my week off for more post #LL16 cleanup 😂)

Middle sticker (überklebt) basically says ‘stickered over, MFer’ - a direct nod to the discursive nature of sticker graffiti.

A fabulous innovation at #LL16: Engaging with the work of artists Daniela Vasconcellos da Silva, Hülya Özkan, and Gregor Sailer and a roundtable discussion on Art and Transformation, "dedicated to an exploration of how various forms of art inform, capture and influence urban transformations"
Artists Daniela Vasconcellos da Silva (left), Hülya Özkan (second from left), and Gregor Sailer (right), as well as the cultural officer from the city of Essen (second from right--sorry, name unknown) at the Linguistic Landscape workshop at University of Essen, Friday, September 5, 2025

(It is possible that my opinion is unacceptably biased but I will hear no dissent)

I almost always love conferences anyway, but DANG this one has already been SO FUN!!!! #LL16
melodyannross.bsky.social
Side note, things are going exceptionally well, but I may or may not be in possession of the plot
melodyannross.bsky.social
Ok but last night was a new one- dreamed that #LL16 was a conference for baby elephants (???? very cute but very disgusting) and while helping a muddy baby participant navigate the stairs, a lion bit my fingers (it hurt). What is even happening with this brain, seriously
melodyannross.bsky.social
Ok so my #LL16 problem of remembering people seems to be backwards. No one recognizes ME with short, straight hair!!

But by far my favorite thing at the moment is “go-for-ing it!” as in “I’m really go foring this pasta!”

She also doesn’t understand that ‘poor’ has anything to do with poverty, and will say ‘aww he’s poor’ to mean something like ‘poor thing’ when she feels sorry for someone, but I don’t think this is necessarily to do with German so much as how we do or don’t talk about people
melodyannross.bsky.social
Her English storytelling style also HEAVILY imbeds in ways I don’t think English monolingual kid’s would (prob more coordination-heavy), and the main clause (and often main V) can be as late as like 8 clauses, but I haven’t really counted. I’m just enjoying it so much ❤️
melodyannross.bsky.social
She has also expanded English ‘by’ to do things that German ‘bei/beim’ can do, like “Rabih said that by snek” (Rabih said that at snack[time]).

We don’t correct, but we do repeat back to her with a more grammatical model sometimes, and I am going to miss this stuff so much when it’s gone.
