Either you assume that Jews are Like This™️ because there is something specifically toxic about the Jewish community (in which case, you're an antisemite), or you recognize it as a universal human trend worth understanding better (which there is ample proof for).

That really was a brilliant and pithy explanation by Benjamin Wittes. It starts around 17:40 minutes in. I'd like to give it to my non-Jewish friends but I don't know whether they are open to hearing it

There was a great discussion on law fare this week about the horseshoe nature of anti-semitism. The enlightening part to me was about why the Israel right wing (and US backers) are more willing to tolerate blood & soil antisemitism, then "left wing" Hamas-accepting type antisemitism.

The Justice Department’s case against James Comey is falling apart in plain sight. Lawfare’s Benjamin Wittes and Anna Bower walk through every “fact” the Trump DOJ offers—and find no lie, no crime, just political vengeance.
The Situation: Where’s the Lie?
The government’s response to James Comey’s vindictive prosecution raises one very big and important question.

My junior high school had a fantastic slot car track in its bomb shelter!
English schools don't have a bomb shelter next to the gym. This is weird. I mean, where do you store all the hoopla rings, basketballs, etc?

E.g, I believe the evidence strongly suggests that out of all human-tested schemes so far, the #Nordic Social #Democracy has been if not the best, then at the very least the least bad way to organize an industrialized society.

Despite its many flaws.

BTW for those who don’t know me yet, below is a TL;DR of my political beliefs. Am an anarcho-Social Democrat :D.

Rawls, Sen and Nussbaum fill out most of the details. The Veil of Ignorance (extended to include ignorance about the _species_ one is born into) and Capability Approach especially.
I consider myself a lefty even by Nordic standards and have been called a communist often enough by the far right loons. Because I do maintain that billionaires are system errors and we need to redistribute resources fairly if we want to have a future worth having.

As I’ve seen this confused a few times, please note that Robin Gibb was a much-beloved member of the Bee Gees, whilst Robbie Gibb is the BBC board member who also, totally coincidentally, was editorial adviser in the set-up of GB News.

I know, Bee Gees, GBeebies, a bit confusing…

Absolutely. Love of country is not a bad thing at all. Wanting your own country to be the best it could be is good. Community is good.

One of the most beautiful things is a community standing up to the far right in defence of their neighbours.

I once had a drunken chat with a far right Japanese nationalist who couldn't stop going on about immigrants.

So I listed what I and my family do to support Japanese culture, society, environment. What did he do?

What he did next was stare fucking daggers because he did nothing whatsoever.

Peter Thiel said it himself his ideologies are so controversial they would not be supported in a democracy. So he is trying all the other means.

When we distinguish between civic and ethnic nationalism, I think we are being too kind to ethnic nationalists.

They have a habit of being highly corrupt, fundamentally destructive people with little interest in the culture & history of their own country. They're not nationalists in the same way.

I think there is an element of every far right movement that genuinely loathes its own country. That it is in Finnish hands promoting Finnish culture is something that revolts them because they are digusted by what Finland is compared to whatever nightmare of perpetual violence and misery they wish.

Of course, this is very often done out of spite, like so many other far right policies.

Because “cultural people” generally aren’t fans of the far right, or their conceptions of Finnishness.

Not to mention how eyewateringly stupid it is to proclaim oneself to be a “defender of Finnish culture and way of life”… and then fiercely cut from the organizations like Yle which actually fund and promote Finnish #culture!

Even unironically suggesting that we all should just watch Netflix.

Aside from this and many other examples, it just boggles my mind that anyone could think that opposing the EU refugee burden sharing scheme is good strategy for a country that has some 1290 kilometers of EU’s external border… and that border can be crossed on foot.

A trusted, widely followed source of news and information that is 100% in Finnish hands is in this day and age a strategic asset and capability, just like fighter jets or long range missiles.

But the far right demonstrates again and again that their overriding objective is winning culture wars.

The Finnish far right has been trying their damnedest to do the same for the most trusted news source in Finland, the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle).

Due to #Finland ‘s geopolitical situation, in the age of infowars that is mindboggling strategic stupidity, if not outright fifth-columnist.
A single shared source of truth is essential for a functioning democracy.

Without it you’re left with fragmentation, polarisation and a perpetual culture war where the discourse focuses on what divides us rather than what we have in common.
