Drive as if someone will jump out on the street at anytime and then be surprised if that doesn't happen. Not the other way around.

Hey All, I will be on NPR's 1A show with Host-Jenn White today. I will be talking about pedestrian safety with Ian Duncan who with the @WashingtonPost.com team has done an amazing job with a series on the subject that goes deep into the challenges.

Pedestrian deaths in the US are on the rise. What can be done?
Between 2010 and 2022, they jumped nearly 80 percent.

Inspiring thread about London’s recent transformation, with great photos
London is fast becoming a cycling city. As each new piece in the network appears—which has more than quadrupled from 90 to 431 km since 2016—so do new cyclists. Its infrastructure now sees a stunning 1.5 million daily users—a 43% spike since 2019—moving nearly half as many people as the Tube below.🧵

The fact that curb extensions have been added at the intersection of the two IDOT-jurisdictioned stroads Ohio St and Michigan Ave sparks a tiny glimmer of hope in my cold, jaded long-time advocate’s heart 💙 *

And guess what the solution is? More safe and convenient options for Chicagoans other than driving!!! Car traffic congestion in Paris, London and NYC have not increased, hmmm, wonder why???

Chicago overtakes NYC for worst vehicle congestion in the US, survey says
Chicago is at the top nationally again amid growing traffic globally, thanks in part to NYC keeping traffic steady after implementing a traffic surcharge in Manhattan.

The city has increased capacity allowance of the Christkindlmarket by 1,000, to about 2,500

City raises Christkindlmarket crowd limit after organizer, vendor complaints
The new limit allows 1,000 more people at a time into the popular Loop holiday market. The earlier capacity reduction led to longer lines and a drop in revenue, vendors said.

So, if anyone knows the risk of unshoveled sidewalks, it has to be State Farm Insurance, right?

When a driver slows from 30 mph to 8 mph to roll through a stop sign, they’ve reduced their speed by 75% so it <feels> to them like they’re complying, whereas

A bicyclist slowing from 10 mph to roll through at the same speed of 8 mph looks to drivers like “they barely slowed down”
I’m always confused when people complain about cyclists not stopping at stop signs.

The vast majority of drivers do a “rolling stop” (i.e., they don’t actually stop) when possible.

This is so normal people don’t even see it as breaking the law, but when cyclists do the same thing, it stands out.

This article says about 1500 people are now allowed in at a time, less than half of the 3500 allowed when COVID restrictions were in place, makes zero sense
City officials surprised vendors at Chicago’s most popular holiday market by imposing new crowd restrictions just hours before it opened last Friday.

I used to get lunch at the Christkindlmarket, but now I cannot because of the long lines. I was only able to get in late at night once after waiting in a long line. And it is maddening, because it feels like there aren't many people once you get in.
Chicago Christkindlmarkt update: Due to severe overcrowding in past years, OEMC has reduced entrance capacity 80% (!!) from 5,000 to 1,000 people. This has caused very long lines and a deserted feel once you got in. 🧵

They’re right about the overcrowding but their solution is the wrong one. Close the streets around the plaza, expand the footprint, or move it to grant park. But this ain’t it Brandon Johnson.

A friend told me the line to enter the Christkindlmarket this past Saturday was three blocks long!
Chicago needs a Chriskindlmarket in every neighborhood next year.

One of my cousins is thinking about bringing his kids to the one downtown in a few weeks. I had to break it to him that it’s so crowded that it’s borderline unsafe, and they should go to the Wrigley one or the Field Museum instead
