The champignon farm my best friend gave us for Christmas seems to be working just fine. The attic (my office space at home) is obviously cold enough 😅

Looking forward to a lot of fried, garlicky mushrooms 🤤 #ChemistsWhoCook

A good morning to build some battery cells 🪫🔋. This is the standard Swagelok cell setup which we use for three-electrode measurements. Anode, separator and cathode are sandwiched between the left and the right stamp. The reference electrode (Zn metal in my case) is connected from the top.

Fears grow over Europe’s soaring dependence on US gas imports
American LNG was meant to be a safe alternative to Russian gas. That’s no longer a given, with transatlantic relations in crisis.

Was ich erwarte:

2. Abschaltung von X
3. OpenAI, Anthropic regulieren
4. Meta-Services hinterfragen

DAS täte weh.

Had an intriguing editorial discussion recently: how did people in the past talk about 'minutes' when they didn't have watches or standardised times? How does that affect your thinking?

Come down an Elizabethan/Jacobean rabbit hole with me.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

Three facts:

- Methane has caused ~30% of the warming we have seen so far.

- Curbing methane emissions is also one of the fastest ways to bend the curve on future warming. It’s a “emergency brake”.

- And the food system emits over half of global methane emissions.

We can’t ignore the largest source of methane
Food is the largest source of human-caused methane – we ignore it at our peril

THREAD of offers of guest lectures (via Zoom) for Minneapolis-area classes so faculty can offer their students a top-quality education while dealing with other crises

Seeing tons of extremely generous offers. I'll try to post 'em all here--please add your own w topics you can cover & how to contact
Finally, a note to the many professors in my networks: One other specific, small thing you can do from outside of Minneapolis is reach out to colleagues who are heavily affected (because of their own or their family's risk, or because they're very busy protecting neighbors) and offer a guest lecture
