Our second panel, Critical AI and Social/Data/Science, chaired by @gildersleve.uk, featured great discussion on identity, computational workers, and social impacts of AI thanks to online and in-person speakers @shugars.bsky.social, @milamiceli.bsky.social, Peaks Krafft, and @lucyosler.bsky.social
Online speaker Shugars presenting a slide with a graphic: "AI is for losers. I can make art that's ugly and bad all by myself. Thank you very much!" Online speaker Milagros Miceli presenting a slide on the Data Workers' Inquiry project Speaker Peaks Krafft presenting their work Speaker Lucy Osler presenting in front of a slide titled "AI Gossip?"

But striking the right balance between accuracy and accessibility when communicating is really tricky. Each engagement demands different timing, caters to different audiences, and allows different levels of depth. And I'm definitely trying to get better at it all!

I’ve always admired researchers like @dylnbkr.bsky.social who can communicate clearly, engagingly, and charmingly because I care deeply about producing knowledge that’s accessible and not just for the books. Our repository at Data Workers' Inquiry is a testimony of that: data-workers.org#Inquiries

I held keynotes and participated in panels, both in person and online. A recording of the keynote I held a few weeks ago at @weizenbauminstitut.bsky.social and the panel with data workers that followed can be watched here:

These past few weeks, I’ve done a lot of public engagement, and it’s reminded me how hard science communication can be!

8/x At a time when concentrated power in the AI industry fuels surveillance, manipulation, and genocide, I want to make sure that this recognition is not seen as mine alone. It belongs to the workers who resist, organize, and struggle every day for a just technological future for everyone.
milamiceli.bsky.social
7/x My research is neither done in a vacuum nor meant to be objective; it is shaped by my own experiences of migration, precarious work, lack, loss, and by the conviction that research only matters if it helps transform reality.
milamiceli.bsky.social
6/x I am who I am, and I do the work I do because working and supporting my family from a very young age taught me that labor without community, solidarity, and organizing is just alienation.
milamiceli.bsky.social
5/x I didn’t have the chance to earn a degree until later in life, and I worked many jobs before becoming an academic. Those experiences taught me a great deal and helped me navigate my research work, despite growing up in a working-class family and being a first-generation college graduate.
