Today I responded to an attempted abduction a literal block from my house.

ICE did not take anyone. We won that round.

But another responder got pepper-sprayed right in the eye, so I ended up walking him to the community center to wash his eyes out.

Remember: Not milk, water or saline.

Alaska officials gave false info to American Samoans, telling them they can vote. (They can’t, due to a unique status.)

Now, the state is threatening them with years in prison, part of GOP’s voting fraud panic.

@burness.bsky.social spent months reporting the story; spend some of your w-e with it.
Americans by Name, Punished for Believing It - Bolts
In a small Alaska town, American Samoans face prosecution for voting in the only country they’ve ever known. They live in a limbo, created by colonial expansion, that now confuses even public official...

you’re already ahead. stay with it. minneapolis stripped these forces of legitimacy (a battle other cities won’t have to repeat). remember they are completely outmanned. their only real advantage is their organizational capacity. out-organize them & the illusion of control will collapse.
I can't describe how bad Minneapolis feels right now. My neighbors are pulling kids out of school. The public schools are offering remote learning until 2/12. We are having conversations in our alleys about how to protect ourselves. It feels like a military occupation with a blockade.
The US Department of Agriculture suspends all federal funding to Minnesota, effective immediately.

Rich embed content (the longform embeds aren't just for our own format, we also support Whitewind, Leaflet, and Pckt, with more formats to come), sidenotes, and inset asides. And atproto embeds work for any type of record even without explicit support! Weaver has a pretty smart generic renderer.

So, I said this during the first Trump administration, and I'll say this again today:

It's worth asking yourself, before you try and pick a fight with someone online who is clearly on the same side, why you're doing it.

What's the end goal? Does it help the cause, or does it just cause dissent?

just say no to table saws for kids, and to table saws with googly eyes
this is unsurprising and really speaks to the problem with the AI hype cycle

it’s not vaporware like NFTs; people do (unfortunately) like interacting with the chatbot and it does have legitimate applications (Claude Code works shockingly well)

but “people want AI agents everywhere”? no
AI PCs aren't selling, and Microsoft's PC partners are scrambling
Microsoft has gone all-in with its plans to turn the Windows PC into an AI-powered 'agentic OS.' But at least one PC maker says consumers aren't buying the Copilot hype.

stasi agents in the former GDR were socially shunned, but were not actually jailed after reunification, right? just trying to figure out what the fuck happens to all of these paramilitary thugs after a change in government policy.

This is Minneapolis:

You pick up groceries for a neighbor who is out of food and can't leave home without fear of abduction.

When you get home, you see neighbors talking about how someone was abducted from the opposite corner of the intersection while you were inside the store shopping.

I've partially audited this code and can at least confirm it has reasonable defence in depth against any kind of user input injection attacks, and there are no hardcoded DIDs or userids or attempts at platform/skyline manipulation. the list of API calls and remote servers is also constrainable.

The actual scales matter here. The carbon footprint is marginal compared to even a short flight (I barely ever fly) or a car trip (I live in a walkable neighborhood). Meanwhile, I'm working on shipping a feature that will eventually save quite massively on compute, at scale

I think there is a discussion to be had here, but it shouldn't be taken out on people who are *using* AI.

we do need to have a reckoning about how UBI gets passed and funded, with taxation of the profits of those developing these labour-replacing/augmenting models. but yelling at users doesn't help
i think a core beef that i have with a lot of this "automation is bad" sentiment lately is that there is no inherent moral good in laboring

the story of humanity is one of invention, where we improve our conditions by building things that help us do more things more easily
I've been sitting with the discomfort here a bunch, and to me this is it, right? What is being suggested is that I engage in an act of self-flagellation (resolving thousands of lines of merge conflicts by hand) because the richest man in the world uses some of the same underlying tech to peddle CSAM

Glinner's decision to go full mask off misogynist about a murdered cis woman really spotlights how gender critical men are hard core misogynists who found a target for their hatred of women that wouldn't get them disinvited from cocktail parties. And now Graham is expanding his target.

How can you look at 40 years of "fuck optics, just say the edgiest slogan as loud as possible", 40 years of failure and marginalization, and conclude Mamdani is the problem

As Minnesotans express their first amendment rights, I encourage you to remain peaceful and know that local law enforcement has one goal in mind: your safety.

So we're clear, if you are an infertile cis man who adopts his partner's kids you can be on the birth certificate but if you are a trans man you can't, is that what this judge has ruled?
