Perry also finds deploying the national guard would "likely to lead to civil unrest," and adds ICE agents behavior "has itself caused a significant increase in protest activity."

Perry asks the govt's counsel if they would potentially seek to send other state's national guard to Illinois if she used narrower language for the restraining order.

Counsel says yes.

"Ok, then I'm gonna go with the broader language," Perry says.

Wild. Also, as a linguist who lives part of the year in the state of Oaxaca, I know that "muxe" is literally just the 16th-century Spanish pronunciation of "mujer," meaning "woman."

Furthermore, Indigenous identity and sexuality operates along different axes than Western conceptualizations.

I could send you the whole paper, it's insane how the paper describes in exacting detail the exact kinds of social structures that arise around straight trans women in patriarchal societies and then goes "this is an incredible deconstruction of gender by these non-transgender third gender non-women"

The allegations center on one document showing that the property would be her primary residence. It's the only document like this; the rest of the loan documents accurately say the home wouldn’t be James’ primary residence.

You can bond out. Prosecutors do not want that smoke and do not want that charge to be made public. You are going to have to get your hands dirty with some civil disobedience here. Demand that they justify themselves under the law. Realize you may be the plaintiff that strikes down Kavanaugh stops.

U.S. District Judge April Perry says it comes down to a "credibility determination."

"I simply cannot credit [the Trump administration's] declarations to the extent they contradict state and local law enforcement. … DHS' perception of events are simply unreliable."

#BREAKING A federal judge say she will grant "in part" a request by the state of Illinois for a temporary restraining order against the deployment of National Guard troops into the state.

U.S. District Judge April Perry is still ruling and has not outlined the details of her order.

U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Virginia
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, announced today that a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging New York State Attorney General Letitia James with Bank Fraud under 18 U.S.C. Section 1344 and False Statements to a Financial Institution under 18 U.S.C. Section 1014.

“No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public’s trust,” said U.S. Attorney Halligan. “The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served.”

If convicted, Letitia James faces up to 30 years in prison, up to a $1 million fine on each count, and forfeiture. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

and previously, the only way they could get the energy spent was wasteful work like cryptocurrency/blockchain mining, but now there's a (IMO) more valuable use of that stranded energy

stealing this phrase. "easier to move gigabits than gigawatts".
bigvalen.bsky.social
You do lose some power, even at 200kV.

The real problem is that grids are under enormous pressure to allow new connections, and can delay adding wind farms and solar parks for YEARS. This can be called stranded power, and big power users chase it.

It's easier to move gigabits than gigawatts.
lizthegrey.com
exactly, what @bigvalen.bsky.social mentioned was that guaranteed load consumption solves the chicken-egg problem of who will consume the power that comes online from a new mega wind farm, so it isn't wasted or dissipated as heat.

Very few journalists are financially independent like Marisa is. A lot more could be but it takes a shitload of courage on the reporting side and a shitload of shameless promotion on the marketing side and not many are up for the task.

We must back the ones who are with cash.

New — I was fortunate to speak in front of students and faculty at Grinnell College in Iowa tonight about the business of independent journalism, the current state of media under Trump 2.0, and billionaire control.

I published my full speech because I thought it might resonate beyond campus:

if you're a developer making a service for other people to use, labeller or not, you should be aware of how your service could be used as a vector for harassment and try to mitigate for that as much as possible. sometimes you make a torment nexus and don't even know it.

John Looney of Crusoe was discussing this at his morning keynote yesterday at #SREcon - describing "clean energy parks" where power consumers and producers gather, similar to the previous generation of network connectivity hubs.

Apparently a giant wind farm being built in western IE for this too.

If you live in a place where flowing electrons are functionally free via like, trivial-to-access geothermal or something maybe you should be a data centers YIMBY so they get built there instead of somewhere they'll drive demand for fossil fuel plants or whatever. Otherwise, like, what are you doing
opinionhaver.bsky.social
no super-strong feelings about data centers generally, they appear to be a light-industrial land use with a typical bundle of positive/negative externalities, but imo it would be a mistake for YIMBY orgs to get hooked into advocating overly for them. Narrower focus on housing/transit is good imo
