I am on tour right now with a book about two gay working class artists who died long before I was born. I’ve visited bookshops and libraries and galleries. And at every event I’ve been welcomed and there has been warmth and community. Books build empathy. The arts connect us. They just do.

My cartoons for this week’s @theguardian.com books
#holiday #vacation #reading
A happy book says:
I'm so proud you chose me as your holiday read! I can't wait to start entertaining you!

A smiling drink says:
And I'm right here! Ready to keep you cool and refreshed while you read!

A gleeful phone adds:
Yay! So great! How about we kick things off with a load of the same old rubbish you always look at, plus some gloomy news and mavbe a few emails from work!!

Hours later...

The drink and book lie untouched.

The phone is out of view but a bubble reads:
Scroll Scroll Scroll Scroll Scroll

The book says
“I hate that guy.”

Let’s not forgot Indie presses are the first to pick up new writing, and some of the biggest books in recent years started out as self-published.

A little thread about accessibility and representation in book marketing. Tiered processes like this makes it so difficult for small indie bookstores to support local and emerging authors.

Contacted Bookshop[dot]org to ask why my books are listed in the US but not in the UK and basically if you're not on the main Gardners list you're not getting in.

RIP Jim Shooter. Comics legend.

As a Marvel editor, he was handed a new toy license to do comics for. Neither Hasbro or Marvel leadership cared about their quality.

Jim did. He rewrote Hasbro's character bios to not be shit, and made his writers treat it seriously.

That license was Transformers.

Publishing finances that dictate that most authors can only afford to write if they make a living doing something else (and have time and space to write around their work) work directly against the drive for more voices from marginalised communities. I don't know how we unpick that. And it stinks.
