One of my favorite words to talk about. In Turkish we call the bird hindi and India is called Hindistan. In Persian the bird is called būqalamūn. In Turkish bukalemun is chameleon.
Why do we call it a 'turkey'?

I love finding random and unexpected vinyls. At the back it says “The music heard here, recorded in Anzahar, Olukman, and Tülünk villages in the province of Sivas in south-eastern Turkey...” 1972 USA release

Americans’ Social Media Use 2025 by @pewresearch.org is out. BlueSky is at 4%.

On a separate note, those of us who teach estimation of proportion in intro stats classes can use the data. Their sampling paragraphs are also easy to understand.

It’s still raining in LA and now I remember the reason why there is light on top of the stove.
Since my London days, I had completely forgotten about the need to turn the lights on during the day. It has been raining nonstop for the last three days in Los Angeles and I am once again reminded about this 💡🛋️🪔

I am glad that these days fewer job applications in academia require recommendation letters in the first round of reviews. It saves us, letter writers, a lot of time. It obviously saves letter readers a lot of time too. I hope it becomes the norm in the near future.

If you have tenure at Texas A&M and aren't maliciously emailing the president a dozen times every day to ask if you can say this or you can say that, then what's the point in having tenure?

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review.

This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month.

Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.
